Steam Deck Beta Client Update Fixes Linux Game Crashes and Controller Issues

Valve has released a new Steam Deck Beta Client update that addresses several recent problems, including crashes in native Linux games, a brief interface flicker after waking the handheld from sleep, and a virtual gamepad issue that could cause some titles to lose controller input.

The update is available through the Steam Deck system settings for devices using the Beta or Preview update channel.

The most important fix targets a regression that caused some native Linux versions of games to crash. Steam Deck relies heavily on Proton for Windows games, but many titles also have native Linux builds. A regression affecting those versions could therefore create problems even when compatibility layers were not involved.

Valve has now corrected that issue in the latest beta client.

Another fix addresses an interface problem that could appear when the Steam Deck resumed from sleep.

Some devices briefly displayed unwanted interface elements or flickering after waking. The new client update removes that regression, helping the handheld return to its normal interface more cleanly.

Virtual gamepad bug could break input in some games

The update also fixes a more technical controller issue involving virtual gamepads.

In certain cases, a game calling the ISteamUtils::SetGameLauncherMode API could temporarily cause Steam's virtual gamepads to be removed and recreated.

For games that support controller hotplugging, this may not create a major problem because the game can detect the controller again automatically.

Other titles are less flexible. If a game does not support controllers being disconnected and reconnected while it is running, the temporary virtual gamepad removal could cause it to lose controller input completely.

Valve has changed the behavior so the virtual gamepad should no longer be torn down when that API command is used.

That fix is especially relevant on Steam Deck because the built in controls depend heavily on Steam Input and virtual controller handling. Even a short interruption can create noticeable problems in games that expect the controller to remain connected throughout a session.

Beta update focuses on regressions rather than new features

This release is primarily a stability update rather than a feature expansion.

Recent Steam Deck beta builds have introduced new interface and customization options, while other updates have added features such as HDR Remote Play support on the OLED model. This release instead concentrates on fixing problems that appeared after previous client changes.

If you use the Stable update channel, these fixes are not necessarily available there yet. Beta and Preview users generally receive changes first so Valve can test them across a wider range of devices and games before moving them into the main release channel.

For Steam Deck owners already running Beta or Preview builds, the update should improve reliability in three practical areas: native Linux game stability, wake from sleep behavior, and controller input consistency.
