A new Starfield mod is attempting to add one of the features players have requested since launch: seamless flight from space down to a planet's surface without relying on the game's usual transition system.
The project is being developed by Frederik Wessberg, a Danish singer songwriter and audio engineer who has spent around six months working on the mod as a personal project.
Rather than simply hiding a loading transition, the mod substantially changes how Starfield renders planets while the player approaches them from space.
Wessberg says he had to rebuild the game's planetary rendering in 3D because the standard version represents distant planets using relatively limited visual elements that are not designed for close approach.
Planet Rendering Uses Starfield's Own World Data
The mod uses Starfield's existing biome information, surface maps, climate data and atmospheric composition as its foundation.
That information is then combined with additional physics based calculations to create a planet that remains visually detailed across a much wider range of altitudes.
| Feature | Seamless landing mod |
|---|---|
| Space to surface travel | Seamless |
| Landing controls | Manual or autopilot |
| Water landings | Supported |
| Planet rendering | Rebuilt in 3D |
| Clouds | Volumetric and climate based |
| Dynamic weather | Supported |
| Atmospheric effects | Physics based |
| Platform | PC only |
| Requirement | Starfield Script Extender |
| Release date | Not announced |
The system considers factors such as orbital phase, distance from the star and the positions of nearby moons.
Moonlight can also affect the scene, while atmospheric scattering is calculated using the composition data already present in the game.
The developer describes Starfield's internal world data as more physically detailed than what the standard presentation exposes to players.
Manual Flight and Autopilot Are Both Supported
The mod is designed to let players choose how they approach a planet.
An autopilot option can manage the descent, but manual flight is also supported for players who want direct control.
The demonstration also shows the ship landing on water, extending the system beyond conventional land based touchdown points.

As the player descends, the ship can move through volumetric cloud formations generated using climate information and dynamic weather systems.
Those conditions can include thunderstorms and lightning.
Other atmospheric effects shown or described include polar auroras, night side airglow and physically informed scattering.
Cities, Oceans and Terrain Remain Visible During Descent
The mod also tries to make the planetary surface feel connected to what is visible from orbit.
City lights can appear from points of interest below, while large terrain features, oceans, ice covered peaks and cloud shadows are rendered across the planet.
Biomes are generated from Starfield's own data and surface cartography rather than being completely independent creations.
The reentry sequence also includes effects around the player's ship.
Heat shield behavior can produce fumes around the hull during atmospheric entry, with an ash layer accumulating as part of the effect.
These details are intended to make the journey between space and the surface feel like one continuous sequence rather than two separate environments.
The Mod Will Be PC Only
The seamless landing project remains a work in progress and does not yet have a release date.
Wessberg has already confirmed that it will be limited to PC.
The mod requires SFSE, the Starfield Script Extender used by many of the game's more advanced PC mods.
That requirement makes a console version unlikely under the current design because SFSE is not available through the standard console mod environment.
For PC players, however, the project could substantially change how exploration feels by connecting orbital flight with planetary surfaces in a way the base game does not currently provide.
Bethesda has also indicated that Starfield development is continuing, with additional stories, gameplay improvements, Starborn content and other updates planned for 2027.
The seamless landing mod is separate from those official plans, but if development continues as shown, it could offer PC players a much more continuous approach to planetary travel.
