Amazon Replaces Fire Tablets With New Alexa Models Running Full Android and Google Play

Amazon is replacing its familiar Fire tablet branding with a new Alexa Tablet lineup that makes a major software change by moving away from Fire OS in favor of standard Android with native Google Play Store support.

The new family includes the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Alexa Tablet 11 and Alexa Tablet 8. All three use aluminum unibody designs instead of the plastic construction associated with many earlier Fire tablets.

The move also means you can install mainstream Android apps such as Gmail, Google Docs, YouTube and Netflix directly from Google Play without relying on sideloading workarounds.

The tablets launch with Android 16, while Android 17 is already planned for a future update.

Alexa Tablet 12 Pro Leads the New Lineup

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is the highest end model and features a 12 inch display with a 2880 × 1840 resolution, 3:2 aspect ratio and 120 Hz refresh rate.

Amazon is offering the display in standard and Nanomatte versions.

The Nanomatte option uses a specially etched glass surface developed with Corning. Amazon says the process is designed to reduce glare while preserving detail, contrast and color accuracy better than conventional matte treatments.

Inside is an eight core MediaTek Dimensity 8400 processor manufactured on a 4 nm process and clocked at up to 3.25 GHz.

The 12 Pro also includes quad Dolby Atmos speakers, an 8 MP front camera and 13 MP rear camera.

Its USB C port supports charging, audio, DisplayPort output and data transfers at up to 5 Gbps.

The tablet measures 6.5 mm thick and weighs 550 grams.

Alexa Tablet 11 Focuses on Entertainment

The Alexa Tablet 11 uses an 11 inch display with a 2560 × 1600 resolution and 90 Hz refresh rate.

It is powered by an eight core MediaTek 8189 processor running at up to 2 GHz and includes 8 GB of memory.

Storage options include 64 GB and 128 GB.

Both front and rear cameras use 8 MP sensors, while the USB C connection supports charging, audio and data transfers at up to 480 Mbps.

Amazon is positioning this model primarily for entertainment rather than higher end productivity.

Alexa Tablet 8 Is the Cheapest Option

The smaller Alexa Tablet 8 uses an 8.7 inch display with a resolution of 1340 × 800.

It comes in two configurations.

The entry model includes 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, while the higher version increases those figures to 8 GB and 128 GB.

The tablet includes a 5 MP front camera and an 8 MP rear camera, along with USB C for charging, audio and 480 Mbps data.

Pricing starts at $229.99 for the 64 GB version with lockscreen advertisements.

A 128 GB model with advertisements costs $279.99, while removing lockscreen ads raises prices to $249.99 and $299.99 respectively.

Alexa Plus Is Built Directly Into the Tablets

Although Amazon is moving to standard Android, Alexa remains central to the new devices.

Alexa+ is integrated directly into the operating system and can be opened using a dedicated Ask Alexa button or voice commands.

The assistant can provide summaries, control smart home devices and suggest actions without requiring you to leave the app currently on screen.

Amazon is also adding a personalized For You feed and Dynamic Tab designed to connect reading, streaming and listening activity across devices.

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro starts at $499.99 for the 128 GB standard display version. The 128 GB Nanomatte model costs $549.99, while the 256 GB Nanomatte configuration is priced at $679.99.

The Alexa Tablet 11 starts at $329.99 with lockscreen ads.

All three models are available for preorder, with retail shipments scheduled to begin on October 14, 2026.
