Sony has confirmed major layoffs at Bungie, with a significant number of employees expected to lose their jobs across the studio. The cuts will reportedly affect much of the team that worked on the Destiny franchise, arriving shortly after Bungie delivered what has been described as the final major update for Destiny 2.
Sony Interactive Entertainment said the decision followed months of internal review involving Bungie’s leadership, development priorities, resource requirements, and the studio’s place within PlayStation’s wider games strategy. The company said it considered other options before deciding that staff reductions were necessary.
The scale of the layoffs has not been confirmed publicly, but the wording suggests the impact will be substantial. Bungie has been one of PlayStation’s most important live service studios since Sony acquired the company, largely because of its experience running Destiny as a long term online game.
Destiny 2 Appears to Be Entering a Different Phase
The cuts are especially significant because they reportedly target the Destiny side of Bungie more heavily than other teams. Destiny 2 has received years of expansions, seasons, updates, and live events, but the studio now appears to be moving away from maintaining the franchise at its previous scale.
That does not necessarily mean Destiny will disappear completely. However, it suggests Sony may no longer see it as practical to keep such a large development team focused on a game that has already received extensive support.
Bungie has said the changes are necessary to position the studio for its future projects, though that statement will provide little comfort to the employees affected or the community members concerned about what happens next.
| Area | Current Situation |
|---|---|
| Bungie workforce | Significant layoffs confirmed |
| Destiny team | Expected to face the largest impact |
| Destiny 2 | Recently received its final major update |
| Marathon team | Some employees reportedly affected |
| Future projects | Studio is said to be evaluating new directions |
| Sony strategy | Resources being aligned with long term priorities |
Marathon Is Also Reportedly Affected
Some members of the Marathon development team are also expected to be affected by the layoffs. The multiplayer extraction shooter launched recently but has reportedly struggled to build a large player base in its early period.
Sony and Bungie are still said to be hoping that future updates can improve Marathon’s position. Live service games often take time to find their audience, especially when they enter a competitive market filled with established shooters and free to play titles.
Even so, cutting staff around a recently released multiplayer game can raise difficult questions. Ongoing online games depend on regular content, technical support, balance updates, anti cheat work, and community management. A smaller team may make it harder to maintain that pace.
Bungie’s Future Is Becoming Less Certain
Bungie has a long history in the game industry. The studio helped create Halo before moving on to Destiny, one of the most influential shared world shooter franchises of the past decade.

Sony acquired Bungie partly to strengthen its live service ambitions and gain access to the studio’s expertise in running large online games. The latest layoffs show how difficult that strategy has become as development costs rise and competition for players becomes more intense.
The company has not announced the number of people affected, which projects will continue, or what its next major game will be after Marathon. For now, Bungie’s future appears to be entering a major transition, with Destiny support reduced and the studio searching for a more sustainable structure.
