The ShadPS4 team has announced ShadNet, an open source project intended to add online connectivity to PlayStation 4 games running through the emulator. The service is still in early testing, but it could eventually allow compatible games to support multiplayer features without using PlayStation Network.
ShadNet is not ready for broad use yet. Account registration has opened, but the launcher has not been released, and the project currently supports score tracking only. Even so, the announcement shows how quickly the ShadPS4 emulator has advanced since its early development stages.
The emulator is best known for making Bloodborne playable on PC with improved performance and visual options. A few years ago, getting the game to run at all was a major milestone. Now, the developers are working toward adding features usually associated with official console services, including online play.
ShadNet Is Still Early, but Its Goals Are Ambitious
The team says ShadNet has been in development for several months and is now ready for limited public testing. Its eventual purpose is to connect ShadPS4 players and allow online compatible games to communicate through a separate network layer.
That could give emulated PS4 games access to functions that usually depend on Sony’s online infrastructure. However, the feature is at a very early stage, and there is no confirmed list of games that will work with it at launch.
There are also likely to be technical limits. Online multiplayer depends on many factors, including the way each game handles matchmaking, saved data, networking, updates, and server communication. Supporting one game does not automatically mean every PS4 title will work in the same way.
| ShadNet feature | Current status |
|---|---|
| Account registration | Available |
| Launcher | Not yet released |
| Score tracking | Available for testing |
| Online multiplayer | In development |
| Compatible game list | Not confirmed |
| Full service release date | Not announced |
Bloodborne Could Benefit From Expanded Emulation Features
Bloodborne is one of the most discussed games connected to ShadPS4 because it has never received an official PC version. The game’s original online systems include co op support, messages, invasions, and other multiplayer features that are a major part of its design.

If ShadNet reaches its broader goals, these features could eventually become possible for people playing through the emulator. However, that remains an expectation rather than a confirmed result. The project needs more testing, and the developers have not said when full multiplayer functionality will be available.
The news follows the release of ShadPS4 version 0.16.0 earlier this month. That update introduced a new configuration system, improved Vulkan stability, better compatibility for PlayStation 4 Pro features, and local multiplayer improvements.
Sony’s Response Remains Unclear
Sony has not publicly taken action against the ShadPS4 emulator so far, but ShadNet could draw more attention because it focuses on online functionality. PlayStation Network and PlayStation Plus remain important parts of Sony’s gaming business, especially as the company continues to invest in multiplayer and live service titles.
Emulation itself also remains a complicated topic. It can help preserve older games and make inaccessible titles easier to study, but it can also raise legal and ethical questions when it involves copyrighted games, game files, or online systems.
For now, ShadNet is a technical experiment rather than a finished alternative to PlayStation Network. Its progress will depend on testing, game compatibility, and how the ShadPS4 team handles the difficult task of building online systems for emulated PlayStation 4 software.
