Shadow of the Road now has a confirmed release date, with the tactical CRPG scheduled to launch on November 12, 2026, for PC. The game will be available through Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG, while no Xbox or Xbox Play Anywhere version has been announced.
Published by Owlcat Games, Shadow of the Road is set in an alternative version of Japan during 1868. Its world mixes historical conflict with steampunk technology, supernatural forces and traditional Japanese folklore.
You will command a group that includes former samurai, retainers and several unusual companions as they travel through a country divided by civil war. At the center of the story is a child with mysterious powers, accompanied by his mother and a large bodyguard.

Tactical combat mixes samurai, steampunk and supernatural powers
Shadow of the Road combines party based role playing with tactical turn based battles. Its alternate history setting introduces advanced machinery alongside traditional weapons and supernatural elements, creating encounters that can involve warriors, mechanical threats and yōkai.
Players will also be able to gain the ability to transform into powerful yōkai during combat, adding another layer to the party's available abilities.
Outside battle, decisions are expected to play a major role in how the story develops. Dialogue choices can influence relationships between party members and alter the direction of the campaign.

One of the more unusual elements is how conversations are handled. Instead of relying entirely on a single player character to make every important dialogue choice, different members of your party can take the lead during conversations. That means the character you choose to speak first can affect the options available and potentially change how an encounter develops.
The system is designed to make the wider party more involved in the narrative rather than treating companions as characters who mostly react to decisions made by one protagonist.
Xbox and console versions remain uncertain
For now, Shadow of the Road is only confirmed for PC. There is no announced Xbox Series X|S version and no Xbox Play Anywhere support.
That is notable because Owlcat Games has previously published titles that reached Xbox, including Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. However, there is currently no confirmation that Shadow of the Road will follow the same path.
A later console release remains possible, but any such plans would be speculation until an official announcement is made.
The November launch gives PC players a firm date after the game appeared again during Gamescom 2026. With its combination of tactical combat, party driven dialogue and an alternative steampunk interpretation of feudal Japan, Shadow of the Road is shaping up as a distinctive CRPG release for the final months of 2026.
