RPCS3 has received a notable performance improvement for systems using NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards after developers found a workaround for a driver issue that had been limiting the PlayStation 3 emulator.
According to testing shared by the emulator team, some systems gained between 20 percent and 25 percent performance after the workaround was applied. The improvement is not limited to recent RTX hardware either, with older GeForce GPUs also showing measurable gains.
The exact benefit varies depending on the game, scene, CPU, and graphics card, so you should not expect every title to become 20 percent faster. Still, the results suggest that the driver issue had been affecting a broad range of NVIDIA hardware.
RTX 3080 and RTX 5090 systems show large gains
Two very different desktop systems were used to demonstrate the improvement.
A PC using an Intel Core i9 13900K with a GeForce RTX 3080 recorded roughly 20 percent higher frame rates in a boat test scene after the workaround.
A newer system built around an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D and GeForce RTX 5090 showed an even larger gain of around 25 percent in the same type of testing.

These results are significant because RPCS3 can be demanding on both the CPU and GPU, particularly in games that rely heavily on PlayStation 3 specific rendering behavior.
Removing unnecessary driver overhead can therefore translate directly into smoother frame rates on systems that were already close to performance limits.
Older GTX hardware also benefits
The workaround was also tested on a much older laptop equipped with an Intel Core i7 7700HQ and GeForce GTX 1060.
Saints Row IV improved by roughly 20 percent, while Saints Row: The Third gained about 10 percent.
That suggests the problem was not limited to one NVIDIA GPU generation.
Players using older Pascal based hardware could therefore benefit alongside owners of newer RTX graphics cards.
The actual uplift will depend heavily on whether a game was being limited by the affected driver behavior in the first place.
Most games may be affected
The RPCS3 developers say the workaround appears to affect most games, although the size of the improvement varies considerably.
That means some titles may show a substantial frame rate increase, while others may improve only slightly or see little practical difference.

Emulation performance is influenced by several factors, including CPU architecture, GPU load, graphics settings, resolution, shader behavior, and the characteristics of the original PlayStation 3 software.
Because of that, the reported 20 percent to 25 percent figures should be treated as examples rather than a universal improvement.
Developers want a better way to report NVIDIA driver bugs
The RPCS3 team has also used the discovery to highlight communication problems with NVIDIA.
According to the developers, previous attempts to report independent software vendor driver bugs through NVIDIA's developer forums did not lead to a useful response.
The team is now asking NVIDIA to establish a more direct communication channel for reporting driver issues that affect the emulator.
That could help future problems get identified and resolved more quickly instead of requiring emulator developers to create their own workarounds.
For RPCS3 players using NVIDIA graphics cards, the latest change is still a welcome development. The emulator has already made substantial progress in PlayStation 3 compatibility and performance, and removing a driver related bottleneck gives both older and newer GeForce systems additional headroom without requiring new hardware.
