ASUS ROG and XREAL have launched the ROG XREAL R1, a new pair of gaming focused AR glasses built to turn handhelds, PCs, and consoles into a large portable display. Preorders are now opening worldwide, with the glasses priced at $849.99.
The biggest feature is the display. The ROG XREAL R1 uses a micro OLED panel with a 240Hz refresh rate, 0.01ms response time, and a virtual screen size of up to 171 inches. That makes it more focused on fast gaming than many earlier AR glasses, which often leaned more toward general media viewing or productivity.
The glasses are designed to work especially well with ASUS ROG Ally handhelds and the newer Xbox Ally lineup. When connected, the handheld can stay active as a control panel while the glasses act as the main display. That lets you adjust brightness, aspect ratio, tint, 3D mode, and other settings without leaving your game.
The ROG XREAL R1 also uses XREAL’s X1 spatial computing chip. This enables native 3DoF tracking, so the screen can stay fixed in space or follow your head movement. The glasses also support an anchor mode, which keeps the virtual display in place while you look around.

For PC gaming, the glasses can be paired with the ROG Control Dock and ASUS DisplayWidget Center. This setup gives you keyboard and mouse control over spatial layout, GamePlus tools, and visual adjustments. The dock also helps explain the high launch price, since the package is aimed at people who want a more complete gaming display setup.

The R1 also includes Bose tuned spatial audio, electrochromic lenses, three manual tint levels, instant transparency mode, and 700 nit peak brightness. These features are meant to make the glasses usable in more lighting conditions while keeping the experience comfortable during longer play sessions.
The launch matters because ASUS and XREAL are positioning the ROG XREAL R1 as gaming hardware first, not a general AR experiment. It is not trying to replace VR or mixed reality headsets. Instead, it focuses on a simpler idea: giving you a large, fast, wearable screen for devices you already own.
The price will be the biggest barrier. At $849.99, the ROG XREAL R1 is clearly a premium product. Still, it could be an important step for wearable gaming displays if the real world experience matches the specs.
