ASUS has opened preorders for the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a premium Windows gaming handheld that launches on October 15 with a larger OLED display, redesigned cooling and upgraded controls.
The standalone model is priced at $1,299.99, while a more expensive bundle costs $2,499.99 and adds several accessories, including ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses.
Although ASUS originally positioned the device around its 20th anniversary celebrations, the X20 is more than a cosmetic refresh. It keeps the core performance hardware of the existing ROG Xbox Ally X while changing several parts of the display, controls, internal design and expandable storage.
ROG Xbox Ally X20 gets a 7.4 inch OLED display
The most visible upgrade is the screen.
ASUS has moved from a 7 inch panel to a 7.4 inch OLED HDR display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 120 Hz refresh rate and FreeSync support.
The panel is rated for 600 nits of SDR brightness and up to 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness. Dolby Vision and ROG Nebula HDR support are also included.
| Specification | ROG Xbox Ally X20 |
|---|---|
| Processor | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme |
| Display | 7.4 inch OLED HDR |
| Resolution | 1920 x 1080 |
| Refresh rate | 120 Hz |
| HDR peak brightness | Up to 1,400 nits |
| Memory | 24 GB LPDDR5X 8000 |
| Storage | 1 TB M.2 2280 SSD |
| Battery | 80 Wh |
| Weight | 756 g |
| WiFi | WiFi 6E |
| Launch date | October 15 |
| Standalone price | $1,299.99 |
The switch to OLED should be one of the biggest practical differences compared with the existing Ally X, especially for games with strong contrast and HDR support.
Cooling and controls receive major changes
ASUS has also redesigned the internal PCB and cooling layout.
Surface mounted USB4 ports allowed the company to reposition the motherboard, creating more room for airflow. The fan and heatsink fin design have also been revised.
The goal is to improve thermal efficiency and maintain more consistent performance during longer gaming sessions.
Control hardware has also changed.
The X20 introduces TMR magnetic induction thumbsticks, which are designed to improve precision while reducing power consumption. ASUS says the sticks operate with an approximately 3% dead zone.
The D pad now uses hybrid metal dome switches and includes a Transforming D pad mechanism that can be rotated to better support diagonal inputs, which could be useful for fighting games.
RGB lighting around each analog stick has also increased from two LEDs to four.
Core hardware remains largely unchanged
ASUS has kept several important specifications from the current ROG Xbox Ally X.
The X20 still uses the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24 GB of LPDDR5X 8000 memory, a 1 TB PCIe Gen4 SSD and an 80 Wh battery.

USB4, Thunderbolt compatibility and WiFi 6E also remain.
One notable storage change is the move from a standard microSD reader to microSD Express.
ASUS says compatible microSD Express cards can approach transfer rates of 1 GB/s, offering much faster removable storage for increasingly large PC games.
$2,499 bundle adds AR glasses and accessories
The $2,499.99 bundle is aimed at collectors and enthusiasts rather than buyers who simply want the handheld.
It includes the ROG Xbox Ally X20, ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a dbrand Killswitch case, custom skin, joystick covers, a Pelican Protector Case and a 68 W charger.
The AR glasses account for a significant part of the bundle’s price. The standard ROG XREAL R1 glasses are normally sold separately and feature 240 Hz micro OLED displays designed to create a large virtual screen.
With the X20 added, ASUS now has a clearer three tier handheld lineup, with the standard ROG Xbox Ally at $599, the Ally X at $999 and the X20 at $1,299.
The X20 is clearly the premium option, but its OLED display, improved cooling, redesigned controls and faster removable storage make it a more substantial upgrade than a typical anniversary edition.
