Rockstar Reportedly Has No Plans to Release GTA VI on Physical Disc

Grand Theft Auto VI may remain without a physical disc version for the foreseeable future, according to a new report. Rockstar Games has already confirmed that retail copies of the game will include a download code rather than a disc, but some players were hoping that a traditional boxed edition would arrive after launch. That now appears unlikely.

A recent report claims Rockstar currently has no plans to print GTA VI discs either at launch or in the months that follow. The information conflicts with an earlier rumor suggesting that a physical disc edition could arrive in December 2026.

For now, anyone buying GTA VI from a retailer should expect a box containing a digital code. The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

GTA VI Retail Copies Are Expected to Contain Download Codes

The decision has caused concern among collectors and people who still prefer buying games on disc. A retail box may look like a physical release, but it does not provide the same benefits as a standard disc copy.

With a disc, you can usually install the game from physical media, lend it to someone else, sell it later, or keep it as part of a collection. A download code does not offer those same options once it has been redeemed.

This also creates a difficult situation for people who prefer buying pre owned games at lower prices. A used GTA VI box with an already redeemed code would have little value, since the new owner would still need to buy the game digitally.

A December Disc Release Rumor Now Looks Uncertain

Earlier reports suggested that Rockstar could release GTA VI on disc in December, potentially giving fans a physical option shortly after the game’s launch. That report helped restore some optimism among collectors.

However, the newer claim suggests those plans may not exist. It is important to treat the situation carefully because Rockstar has not publicly confirmed whether a disc version will never happen. The report only states that there are no current plans for discs to be printed.

Plans can change, especially for a game as large as GTA VI. Rockstar could still reconsider if there is enough demand, if retail partners push for a proper physical edition, or if the company changes its approach after launch. At the moment, though, there is no clear sign that a disc release is being prepared.

The Physical Game Market Has Continued to Shrink

Rockstar’s decision arrives as physical game sales continue to decline. U.S. spending on new physical games reportedly fell to about $1.5 billion in 2025, the lowest tracked result since 1995. That is far below the market’s 2008 peak of around $11.6 billion.

Digital sales now make up a much larger share of the gaming business, and many consoles are sold without disc drives. Publishers also have reasons to prefer download codes, including lower manufacturing costs, reduced risks of early leaks, and more control over game distribution.

Still, GTA VI is not a normal release. It is one of the biggest games of the decade, and its approach to physical media could influence how other major publishers handle future launches.

For collectors, resale buyers, and people who value game preservation, the lack of a disc may remain one of the most disappointing parts of GTA VI’s release strategy.
