Rockstar Is Giving GTA V Players Free PS5 And Xbox Series X|S Upgrades

Rockstar is making the current generation version of Grand Theft Auto V free for eligible PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners. Starting June 18, players who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of GTA V can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S version at no extra cost.

This removes the previous $40 upgrade price and gives more players access to the enhanced version of Rockstar’s 2013 open world game. The upgraded edition includes 60FPS gameplay, support for up to 4K resolution, faster loading, improved textures, better draw distance, HDR support, audio upgrades, and ray tracing features.

The move comes as Rockstar prepares for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Even with the next game approaching, Rockstar is still keeping GTA V and GTA Online active with new content and quality of life improvements.

Who can get the free GTA V upgrade

The free upgrade applies to players who already own GTA V on older console platforms. PlayStation 4 owners are covered if they own any version of the game. On Xbox, the offer applies to owners of the digital Xbox One version.

That distinction matters because Rockstar’s wording specifically mentions the digital Xbox One edition. Players with physical Xbox One copies may need to check their eligibility once the offer goes live.

For players who skipped the paid upgrade, this is now the easiest way to move to the newer console version without buying the game again.

What the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version adds

The current generation version of GTA V launched in 2022 with several technical improvements over the original console releases. The biggest upgrade is performance, with 60FPS gameplay available on newer hardware.

The game also supports up to 4K resolution, depending on the selected graphics mode. Visual improvements include sharper textures, better draw distance, HDR, and ray tracing elements. Faster loading also makes moving into Los Santos and GTA Online less frustrating than on older consoles.

These upgrades do not turn GTA V into a new game, but they make the experience smoother and more modern. For anyone still playing the PS4 or Xbox One version, the difference should be noticeable.

GTA Online players should check profile migration

Players who use GTA Online will need to pay attention to profile migration. Moving from last generation consoles to current generation versions requires transferring the GTA Online profile.

That process is important because GTA Online progress, characters, money, vehicles, businesses, and other account details are tied to the player’s profile. Anyone upgrading should make sure they understand the migration steps before switching versions.

The free upgrade also lands ahead of The Kortz Center Heist, a new GTA Online update that will send players after valuable international art from a gallery in Pacific Bluffs. That timing gives returning players another reason to move to the current generation version.

Rockstar is still supporting GTA V before GTA VI

The free upgrade shows that Rockstar is not done with GTA V yet. The game is more than a decade old, but GTA Online remains one of the company’s biggest ongoing platforms.

With GTA VI launching later this year, Rockstar could have slowed down support for GTA V. Instead, the company is making the newer console version easier to access and continuing to add online content.

That makes sense from a player base perspective. GTA V still has a large audience, and GTA Online will likely remain active even after GTA VI arrives. Giving older console owners a free upgrade helps keep more of that audience on modern hardware.

A late but welcome move for console players

The free upgrade is coming years after the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version first launched, so some players may feel it should have happened sooner. Still, removing the paid upgrade fee is a welcome change.

For anyone who already paid for the newer version, this announcement may not mean much. But for players who stayed on the older edition because they did not want to spend another $40, the timing is helpful.

Grand Theft Auto V has been released across three console generations, and this offer makes the newest console version more accessible. As Rockstar moves toward GTA VI, it is giving GTA V players one more reason to return to Los Santos on better hardware.
