PS6 Handheld $600 Price Rumor Dismissed as Leaker Says Cost Could Be Much Higher

A rumored $600 launch price for Sony's expected PlayStation 6 handheld is being challenged, with a hardware leaker claiming that such a low figure is not realistic under current conditions.

The handheld itself has not been officially announced, so its specifications, pricing and release plans remain unconfirmed. However, several reports have suggested that Sony is developing a portable system connected to its next generation PlayStation strategy.

According to the latest discussion, the proposed $600 price is “definitely not possible right now.” The same conversation also suggested that a price closer to $1,000 would not be surprising, although that should not be treated as a confirmed target from Sony.

Rumored 24GB memory configuration could increase costs

One of the biggest factors behind the higher price expectations is memory. The PS6 handheld is rumored to include 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, a relatively large amount for a portable gaming device.

Current premium handheld PCs already show how expensive high capacity memory configurations can become. Some 32GB systems from manufacturers such as Lenovo and GPD now sell for more than $1,500, although direct comparisons with a PlayStation device are difficult because Sony uses a different hardware and software business model.

Sony could theoretically sell the handheld with a smaller hardware margin because it also earns money from PlayStation Store purchases, subscriptions and other services. That could allow the company to price the system below similarly equipped Windows handheld PCs.

Still, the current discussion suggests that expectations around $800 to $1,000 may be more realistic than the earlier $600 rumor if the reported specifications are accurate.

The memory specification is also still based on unofficial information, so pricing estimates built around it remain speculative.

Sony could still have a cheaper portable option

A separate PlayStation Portal model with an OLED display has also been rumored for 2026. If that product appears, it could provide a lower cost portable option for players who want access to PlayStation games without buying a full native handheld.

That distinction would be important. The current PlayStation Portal is designed around streaming rather than running PlayStation games locally, while the rumored PS6 handheld is expected to operate more like a dedicated portable console.

Sony has not confirmed either the PS6 handheld's specifications or its price. The latest comments therefore mainly weaken the earlier $600 claim rather than establish a new official figure.

For now, the safest conclusion is that a $600 launch price appears increasingly doubtful if the reported 24GB memory configuration is correct. A significantly higher price may be possible, but Sony's final hardware design, manufacturing costs and subsidy strategy will ultimately determine where the handheld lands.
