POCO X4 Pro 5G: Flashy Android mid-ranger for young audiences!

POCO X4 Pro 5G is one of the latest smartphones that aims to deliver a flagship-like experience at a reasonable price of approximately 330 USD / 300 Euro. It was showcased for the first time during the Mobile World Congress 2022 in Barcelona. We’ve been at the Xiaomi/POCO stand, used it, photographed it for a couple of minutes, and we’re now ready to share our hands-on experience with it:

Meet the new POCO X4 Pro 5G

POCO X4 Pro 5G is a large 6.67” smartphone with a 120Hz AMOLED display, and a touch sampling rate of up to 360 Hz, making it a good choice for mobile gamers. Its top brightness reaches 1200 nits, and the resolution is 2400 x 1080 pixels. The smartphone’s screen is secured by Gorilla Glass 5 and the device itself comes with IP53 protection against dust and water splashes.

When using this smartphone, I was impressed by its large camera bump on the back, which houses a large 108 Megapixel 1/1.52" sensor. You also get an 8 MP ultra-wide camera (118° FoV, f/2.2), a 2 MP macro camera, and a LED flash. Personally, I think the camera bump is a bit too large, and I don’t like the big POCO logo on it. On the other hand, the punch-holed selfie camera on the front is rather discreet, and it has a 16 MP sensor (f/2.4).

As you notice from the picture above, this smartphone’s glass back is very reflective, and the lights around the phone create some interesting effects on it. All three color versions of the POCO X4 Pro 5G (blue, black, and yellow) have such reflective backs. Users who prefer more discreet designs may consider this too much, while other audiences will love it.

On the right side of the POCO X4 Pro 5G you find the Power button, which doubles as a fingerprint sensor, and the Volume rocker. On the bottom, there’s a speaker, a USB Type C port, a microphone, and the Hybrid Dual SIM tray, that can house a Nano-SIM and a microSDXC card or two Nano-SIMs in a dual stand-by configuration. On the top, you find the headphone jack, another speaker, a second microphone, and an infrared sensor.

Inside the POCO X4 Pro 5G, you find an octa-core Qualcomm SM6375 Snapdragon 695 5G chipset with a clock speed of up to 2.2 GHz, with 128 GB of storage space and 6 GB of RAM or 256 GB of storage and 8 GB of RAM. An interesting feature is that you can increase the RAM on your POCO X4 Pro 5G by adding up to 3GB from the storage space. Think of it like the paging file from Windows. To increase the appeal for gamers, POCO has also added a liquid cooling system on this smartphone, so that it doesn’t heat too easily when you play a demanding game.

In terms of connectivity, we get NFC (this feature is market-specific), Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, and a Wi-Fi chip that, unfortunately, doesn’t support Wi-Fi 6 networks, only Wi-Fi 5 ones. We feel that Wi-Fi 6 should become the standard on mid-range smartphones too, not just premium ones.

The battery is very generous, having a capacity of 5000 mAh. The smartphone offers 67W fast charging, which should charge the battery to 100% in approximately 41 minutes. One cool aspect is that the smartphone comes with a charger in the box. Headphones are not included though, and need to be purchased separately.

In terms of software, POCO X4 Pro 5G has MIUI 13 installed which is based on Android 11 and tends to have many preinstalled apps. Hopefully this smartphone will get an update to Android 12 soon. However, there’s no official information about this aspect right now.

Based on its design, hardware, and our hands-on experience, we feel that this smartphone is targeted mostly at young audiences. Also, with it’s 6.67” size, 205 grams weight and 8.1mm thickness, POCO X4 Pro 5G seems to be a good choice mostly for men and people with large hands.
