PlayStation Reportedly Takes Most Console Launch Sales for Major Third Party Single Player Games

New estimates suggest that PlayStation accounts for around 75% to 80% of launch sales for major third party single player games on consoles, compared with Xbox. The discussion has gained attention as Grand Theft Auto 6 preorders begin, with competing claims emerging over how sales may be split between PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

One early claim suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6 preorders on PlayStation 5 were outselling Xbox orders by as much as eight to one. Xbox has pushed back against that figure, saying it does not reflect official preorder data and insisting that its own orders have been strong.

Neither company has released verified sales figures, so the true split remains unknown. However, wider estimates based on industry data suggest PlayStation has a clear advantage for many large third party single player releases.

GTA 6 Preorder Claims Have Started a Console Sales Debate

The debate began after an affiliate tracking survey suggested that PlayStation 5 preorders for Grand Theft Auto 6 were significantly ahead of Xbox Series X and S. The figure quickly spread online, partly because GTA 6 is expected to become one of the largest entertainment launches ever.

Xbox disputed the claim and said affiliate link data should not be treated as a meaningful measure of total preorder activity. The company argued that buyers should wait for verified sales information rather than relying on limited tracking data.

That response is understandable, as affiliate data can only show purchases made through specific links or stores. It does not include every retailer, region, physical preorder, console bundle, or digital storefront.

Still, the wider sales pattern may be more important than the disputed eight to one number.

Industry Data Suggests PlayStation Has a Strong Lead

Games industry analyst Chris Dring said that major third party AAA single player games usually receive around 75% to 80% of their console launch sales from PlayStation. The estimate is reportedly based on broader global data from analytics firms and reflects average launch performance rather than a single game.

Console platformEstimated share of launch sales for major third party single player games
PlayStationAround 75% to 80%
XboxAround 20% to 25%

The gap is not necessarily the same for every release. Online multiplayer games, subscription driven titles, and games with strong Xbox marketing partnerships can have a different split. However, the estimate suggests PlayStation has become the dominant platform for premium single player third party releases.

PS5 Install Base Likely Shapes the Sales Difference

The most obvious reason for PlayStation’s advantage is the difference in console ownership. PS5 has reportedly sold far more units worldwide than Xbox Series X and S, which gives publishers a much larger potential audience on Sony’s platform.

A larger install base does not guarantee stronger sales for every game, but it often has a major effect on blockbuster releases. Publishers tend to focus marketing and retail planning around the platform with the biggest pool of potential buyers.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is likely to follow that broader trend, though its sales should be huge on both PlayStation and Xbox. Rockstar Games and Take Two Interactive will benefit regardless of where copies are sold, as long as demand remains as high as expected.

GTA 6 Could Still Break Records on Both Platforms

Some forecasts suggest Grand Theft Auto 6 could sell more than 45 million copies around launch. That estimate remains highly ambitious, and the final result will depend on pricing, release timing, console supply, digital availability, reviews, and the overall market.

The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. By then, preorder data may provide a clearer picture of how demand is split between PlayStation and Xbox.

For now, the safest conclusion is that PlayStation will likely lead console sales for GTA 6, as it does for many major third party single player releases. The exact margin remains uncertain, and claims of an eight to one gap should be treated carefully until verified sales figures become available.
