PlatinumGames is returning to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, a new action game based on the acclaimed graphic novel series. The project was announced during Summer Game Fest, where Paramount Games Studio and PlatinumGames showed a short teaser built around the story’s darker tone.
The reveal did not include a release window or confirmed platforms, which suggests the game may still be early in development. Even so, the announcement is notable because PlatinumGames already has history with the franchise. The studio developed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan in 2016, a game that had promise but did not fully deliver the depth many expected from a Platinum action title.
The Last Ronin gives the studio a very different kind of material to work with. Instead of focusing on the usual four turtle team dynamic, the story takes place in a future version of New York City where only one Turtle remains. The lone survivor sets out on a mission of revenge and justice after losing his family, giving the game a much heavier emotional foundation than most TMNT adaptations.
The Last Ronin could be a better fit for PlatinumGames’ action strengths
PlatinumGames is best known for fast, stylish combat through games such as Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and NieR: Automata. The Last Ronin’s premise gives the studio room to build a more focused action experience around one highly trained fighter rather than a full team of characters.
That could help the game avoid some of the issues that affected Mutants in Manhattan. The 2016 TMNT game tried to capture cooperative action with all four turtles, but it struggled to match the polish and combat depth normally associated with PlatinumGames. The Last Ronin, by contrast, has a clearer central figure, a more serious tone, and a story that naturally supports intense one on one combat, stealth, traversal, and weapon variety.

The story moves TMNT into a harsher future
The Last Ronin has always stood apart from many other TMNT stories because of its tone. It is not built around lighthearted teamwork or Saturday morning cartoon energy. It follows loss, survival, and revenge in a city that has already taken almost everything from its hero.
That direction could make the game appealing to players who want a more mature TMNT story. The teaser did not show much, but the image of a lone warrior standing against a red background was enough to make the tone clear. This is likely not being positioned as a simple arcade brawler.

The setting also gives PlatinumGames room to design a more atmospheric version of New York. A future, battle ravaged city can support ruined streets, enemy controlled zones, rooftop movement, and set piece fights that feel different from earlier TMNT games.
PlatinumGames has a chance to redeem its TMNT history
The comparison with Mutants in Manhattan will follow this project until release. That earlier game had the right developer on paper, but it did not become the standout TMNT action game many fans wanted. The Last Ronin now gives PlatinumGames a second chance with the franchise, and the source material may be a stronger match for the studio’s best qualities.
There are still many unanswered questions. The trailer did not confirm whether the game will be fully single player, whether it will include RPG systems, how combat will work, or whether other familiar characters will appear through flashbacks or story sequences. The lack of platforms and timing also means expectations should stay measured for now.
Still, the announcement is important. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is one of the most respected modern TMNT stories, and PlatinumGames remains one of the most recognizable names in action game development. If the studio can pair its combat expertise with the graphic novel’s darker emotional weight, The Last Ronin could become the TMNT game fans have been waiting for.
