Capcom has shared new footage of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and it suggests that one of the biggest concerns from the game’s earlier demo may be receiving attention. The latest showcase showed the Genma enemies attacking protagonist Miyamoto Musashi with greater speed and pressure, although the footage was too heavily edited to confirm how the final game will feel in extended combat.
The new Onimusha entry is still scheduled to launch on September 25, 2026. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Earlier retailer listings pointed to a September 4 release, but Capcom has now confirmed that the later date remains correct.
The game will be the first new mainline Onimusha release since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006. That makes it an important return for a series that has remained quiet for many years.
New Footage Suggests Genma Enemies May Be More Active in Combat
The earlier playable demo raised concerns that enemies did not attack often enough. Some players felt that the Genma were too passive, which reduced the tension of combat and made encounters feel less demanding than expected.
Capcom’s latest footage appears to address that issue. A new Genma enemy called Dohatsu ten was shown attacking Musashi quickly with a series of sword strikes. The enemy’s design fits the dark fantasy direction of the game, while its behaviour suggests that fights may require more active defence and faster reactions.

However, this should still be treated carefully. A short and edited showcase cannot show whether enemy aggression remains consistent across regular encounters, boss fights, and later parts of the game. The final answer will come when more uncut gameplay is available.

Miyamoto Musashi Faces Genma Demons in a Dark Fantasy Kyoto
The showcase also offered another look at the game’s story and setting. Musashi will battle the Genma in a supernatural version of Kyoto, with several real world locations reimagined for the game’s darker tone.
Capcom highlighted places including Kiyomizu dera and Yasui Kompiragu, which will appear as part of the world. The studio also introduced parts of the supporting cast and explained more about Musashi’s struggle against the demon threat.
The use of Kyoto gives the game a strong setting, especially because Onimusha has always mixed Japanese history with fantasy and supernatural action. Way of the Sword appears to continue that approach while aiming for a more modern presentation and combat system.
September Will Be a Crowded Month for New Releases
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will now arrive during a busy September release period. The game is expected to launch close to Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall, giving players several major action and horror titles to consider in a short time.
That could make the competition difficult, but Onimusha has a clear advantage in being a returning series with a distinct style. Its sword combat, supernatural setting, and long absence may help it stand out if Capcom can deliver satisfying gameplay.
For now, the new footage gives fans a reason to feel more confident about the combat. Capcom still needs to show more unedited gameplay, but the more aggressive Genma shown in the latest trailer is a promising sign before the September 25 launch.
