Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to bring Capcom’s long dormant samurai action series back on September 4, 2026. The new game is designed as a standalone entry, so you will not need to play the earlier Onimusha titles before starting it. It follows Miyamoto Musashi through a supernatural version of Edo era Kyoto, where a dark force called Malice has drawn dangerous Genma creatures into the city.
The release is important for the series because it is the first mainline Onimusha game since 2006. Capcom has modernized the formula with faster combat, larger areas to explore, and a stronger focus on timing based sword fighting. At the same time, the game keeps several familiar ideas, including the Oni Gauntlet, soul absorption, supernatural enemies, and the Issen counterattack system.

Capcom has confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game was originally expected later in September, but its release was moved forward to September 4.

How the new Onimusha combat system works
The game is a third person action adventure built around close range sword combat. Capcom has said it is not a Soulslike and it will not use an open world structure. Instead, it uses wider linear areas that expand as the story progresses. You can revisit earlier locations, explore optional content, and continue through the main story without being forced into side missions.
Musashi uses one main katana throughout the game. This is a deliberate choice, as Capcom wants you to learn the weapon deeply rather than constantly switch between different loadouts. The combat system includes quick attacks, heavy attacks, parries, deflects, and Issen counters.
Issen remains the most important mechanic. A well timed counter can deal major damage, while Break Issen gives you a choice between damaging stronger enemies or collecting more souls. Chain Issen can let skilled players defeat several nearby enemies in one continuous sequence.

The Oni Gauntlet also returns with a larger role. Yellow souls restore health, red souls are used for upgrades, and blue souls power special Oni Armaments such as bows, clubs, and spears. Musashi can also use Oni Vision to find hidden threats and points of interest.
A darker Kyoto and a new version of Miyamoto Musashi
The game takes place in a supernatural Kyoto rather than the Sengoku era settings used by earlier Onimusha titles. Musashi is based on the likeness of legendary actor Toshiro Mifune, though Capcom has said the character is not intended to be a direct recreation of him.
Several historical figures appear in new roles, including Sasaki Ganryu, Izumo no Okuni, and Ono no Takamura. Musashi’s rivalry with Ganryu will play a major role in the campaign, with repeated boss encounters expected across the story.
Capcom estimates that the campaign will take around 20 hours. The story is separate from both previous games and the Netflix animated series, making it easier for newcomers to start with this release.
PC requirements and performance targets
On PC, Onimusha: Way of the Sword will require 16GB of RAM, Windows 11, DirectX 12, and 50GB of SSD storage. Capcom will support DLSS 4.5 and FSR 3.1 for upscaling, while ray traced reflections will be available without path tracing.
| Preset | Suggested graphics card | Expected target |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | GTX 1660 or RX 5500 XT | 1080p at 30fps |
| Recommended | RTX 2060 Super or RX 6600 | 1080p at 60fps |
| High | RTX 4060 Ti or RX 6750 XT | 1440p at 60fps |
| Ultra | RTX 4070 Ti or RX 7900 XT | 4K at 60fps |
Onimusha: Way of the Sword looks positioned as a more focused action game than many modern open world releases. Its success will likely depend on whether its sword combat, boss fights, and supernatural Kyoto setting can make the long wait for a new Onimusha game feel worthwhile.
