Nvidia’s RTX 3060 12GB returns in China as GPU shortages keep older cards alive

Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 12GB is returning to shelves in China, even though the card first launched five years ago. The comeback is starting with Colorful’s Battle Ax GeForce RTX 3060 DUO 12GB V2, which is now appearing in limited batches at around 2,199 yuan, or roughly $325.

The return says a lot about the current GPU market. Newer cards are available, but shortages and higher memory prices have made budget upgrades more difficult. That has created room for older GPUs with more VRAM to become useful again, especially for buyers who want a cheaper card for mainstream gaming and light productivity.

The RTX 3060 12GB was once one of Nvidia’s most popular value cards, and it remains attractive because of its memory capacity. Its 12GB of VRAM gives it an advantage on paper over newer entry level cards such as the RTX 5060 8GB. More VRAM can help in some games at higher resolutions or with heavier texture settings, and it can also help in tasks such as video editing and basic design work.

Still, this is not a simple win for the older card. The RTX 5060 8GB is faster in most gaming scenarios, even with less memory. It also uses a newer architecture and supports newer platform features. That means buyers choosing the RTX 3060 12GB are mainly choosing memory capacity and price availability, not raw performance.

The initial supply appears limited. Some regions reportedly received only a few dozen units, though regular weekly restocking is expected. That means this is not a full scale return yet. It looks more like a controlled re entry meant to fill a gap in the market while newer cards remain expensive or harder to find.

The price is also important. At around $325, the RTX 3060 12GB is close to its original $329 launch price from 2021. That is unusual for a card this old. In a normal market, a five year old mid range GPU would be much cheaper. But the current shortage has changed the math, making older hardware more competitive than it would normally be.

For budget gamers, the RTX 3060 12GB may still make sense in specific cases. If you play games that benefit from more VRAM, use creative apps that can take advantage of extra memory, or need a card that is available right now, it can still be a practical option. Its dual fan cooler and broad compatibility also make it easy to fit into many older PC builds.

But buyers should be careful. The RTX 3060 12GB is not suddenly a better card than newer models. It is slower than the RTX 5060 in most cases, and its age matters. Anyone buying one in 2026 should compare actual local pricing, warranty terms, and performance needs before choosing it over a newer GPU.

The comeback also shows how long popular graphics cards can stay relevant when the market becomes strained. The RTX 3060 12GB never fully lost its appeal because Nvidia and AMD both moved many newer mainstream cards to 8GB configurations. That gave the older card a lasting selling point.

For Nvidia and its board partners, bringing back the RTX 3060 12GB is a practical way to serve demand without relying only on newer chips. For buyers, it is another option in a difficult GPU market. It is not the fastest choice, but it offers more VRAM than many newer budget cards and may appeal to people who want a mid range upgrade without paying too much more.

The bigger story is that GPU pricing still has not returned to normal. When a five year old card can return near its launch price and still look competitive to some buyers, the market is clearly under pressure. The RTX 3060 12GB comeback is useful, but it is also a reminder that affordable PC gaming hardware remains harder to find than it should be.
