Nintendo Switch 2 now supports variable refresh rate in docked mode, giving developers more flexibility to use 40 FPS targets and unlocked frame rates on compatible displays.

Early testing suggests the implementation is stronger than the one currently available on PlayStation 5 in some important areas. In 60 Hz mode, Switch 2 supports a VRR range of 40 to 60 Hz, matching Xbox Series X|S and going below the 48 to 60 Hz range used by PlayStation 5.

The system also supports low frame rate compensation in 120 Hz mode, which can help smooth presentation when performance falls below the normal VRR operating range.

The main limitation is that games need to be updated before they can use docked VRR properly.

40 FPS modes now make more sense in docked play

The 40 Hz lower limit is important because it gives developers another useful performance target between 30 FPS and 60 FPS.

A stable 40 FPS mode can feel considerably smoother than 30 FPS when paired with a 120 Hz display. It also gives developers more rendering time per frame than a 60 FPS target, which can be useful for games with heavier graphics workloads.

This means Switch 2 developers can now offer display modes that balance image quality and responsiveness more effectively in docked mode.

Unlocked performance modes may also benefit because VRR can hide smaller fluctuations in frame rate when they remain inside the supported range.

In 120 Hz mode, low frame rate compensation provides another layer of support by repeating frames when performance falls outside the normal VRR window.

Existing games will not automatically gain the feature

The system update alone does not make docked VRR work across the entire Switch 2 library.

Games need specific support, which means developers must issue patches for existing titles. At the moment, support remains limited.

That is the biggest practical weakness of the feature.

A technically strong VRR implementation has limited value if older games continue using fixed display modes. Future releases are more likely to include support from launch, especially now that developers can target VRR in both handheld and docked configurations.

This could be particularly useful for demanding first party and third party games that struggle to maintain a fixed 60 FPS.

One system setting may cause inconvenience

The implementation also has an unusual behavior.

When VRR is enabled in the Switch 2 display settings, the system keeps it active even when the software being played does not support it.

For most people, that may not create a noticeable problem. It can become inconvenient for players who use display technologies such as black frame insertion, which may not work correctly while VRR is enabled.

In those cases, you may need to manually turn VRR off before playing software that does not benefit from it.

The feature therefore works well technically but still depends heavily on software support and system settings.

Nintendo took more than a year after the console's launch to add docked VRR, but the final implementation appears capable. Its 40 to 60 Hz range and full low frame rate compensation in 120 Hz mode provide a strong foundation for developers.

The next step is broader game support. If future Switch 2 releases regularly include 40 FPS and unlocked VRR modes, the update could have a meaningful effect on performance and image quality in docked play.
