Blizzard has officially revealed a new StarCraft game, confirming that the long running strategy franchise is moving into open world shooter territory.
Simply titled StarCraft, the project is currently planned for release in 2030. Blizzard announced the game during BlizzCon 2026 with a cinematic trailer, although no gameplay footage was shown.
The long development window means many details remain unknown. What Blizzard has shown so far points toward a game focused on the experience of fighting as a Terran Dominion Space Marine rather than commanding armies from above.

The new StarCraft puts you inside the Terran war machine
The announcement trailer follows the preparation of an unnamed Terran Dominion Space Marine.
You see the soldier being trained, equipped and prepared for battle while Arcturus Mengsk delivers a speech about fighting the Zerg. Mengsk is one of the most important political figures in StarCraft and a major antagonist across the series.
The trailer eventually shows the Marine entering combat against the Zerg.
Its final moments take a darker turn. The soldier does not return with the armor. Instead, his damaged and bloodied equipment is shown being cleaned and repaired aboard a Dominion ship.
That presentation suggests Blizzard wants the game to explore the dangerous and disposable nature of life inside the Dominion military.
The presence of Mengsk also provides an important clue about the timeline. The game appears to take place during or before the events of StarCraft 2, rather than moving the series far beyond its existing storyline.
Blizzard has not yet confirmed exactly where the game fits into the established chronology.
StarCraft is moving away from its RTS roots
The biggest change is the genre itself.
StarCraft became one of the defining real time strategy franchises on PC, so an open world shooter represents a very different direction.

There had been speculation that Blizzard could announce another traditional RTS project, particularly after renewed attention around StarCraft ahead of BlizzCon. The reveal provided no indication that a new strategy game is currently part of the announcement.
Instead, Blizzard appears to be using the StarCraft universe as the basis for a large scale action game.
That could allow the studio to explore environments, factions and combat from a perspective that the main RTS games could only show from a distance.
Details about weapons, character progression, multiplayer, vehicles, exploration and the structure of the open world have not been announced.
Blizzard has tried a StarCraft action game before
This is not the first attempt to turn StarCraft into an action focused experience.
StarCraft: Ghost was announced during the early 2000s as a stealth action game starring Nova, a Ghost operative. The project went through years of development, studio changes and delays before ultimately disappearing.
Nova later remained part of the franchise through StarCraft 2 and other stories, but Ghost itself never reached players.
The newly announced StarCraft does not currently appear to be a revival of that cancelled project. Its focus on a Dominion Space Marine and an open world structure suggests Blizzard is building a separate concept.
With a planned 2030 release, the new StarCraft is still several years away. The cinematic reveal establishes its setting and direction, but the most important questions about how the open world works and how closely the combat reflects StarCraft’s established factions will have to wait for future updates.
