The NeoGeo AES+ will arrive much later than expected after Plaion Replai and SNK delayed the retro console because of component shortages and stronger than expected demand.
The system had originally been scheduled for November 2026, but its worldwide release has now moved to September 16, 2027. The companies say memory chip availability is a major factor behind the delay, with growing demand from AI infrastructure putting pressure on supply.
Rather than launch the console in very limited quantities, the companies have decided to extend production preparations and increase manufacturing capacity.

The NeoGeo AES+ is a modern recreation of SNK's original NeoGeo AES home console, which debuted in 1990 and became known for bringing arcade style games into the home.
The new version keeps the design focused on retro gaming while adding modern display and connectivity features.

The extended delay gives the companies additional time to secure parts and prepare enough inventory for a wider launch.
Demand exceeded initial expectations
Preorders for the NeoGeo AES+ reportedly attracted more interest than the companies initially forecast.
That demand created a problem because production capacity was already being constrained by shortages in key components.
Plaion Replai said proceeding with the original release schedule could have resulted in very limited availability, leaving many customers unable to buy the system.
The company therefore chose to delay the launch instead of releasing a small first batch.
Existing preorder holders will keep their places in the order queue, and no price increase is currently planned for those reservations.
Memory supply is affecting the console launch
The companies specifically pointed to strong demand for memory chips as one of the reasons behind the production difficulties.
Memory supply has faced increased pressure as companies expand AI infrastructure and require larger quantities of memory for servers and accelerators.
The NeoGeo AES+ is a much smaller product than major AI hardware projects, but shortages can still affect manufacturing when component demand rises across the broader electronics industry.
The companies have not disclosed which specific memory components are constrained or how much production capacity needs to increase before launch.
Extra development time could expand the game library
The delay may also give Plaion Replai and SNK more time to expand the software lineup.
Ten games have already been confirmed for launch, but Plaion Replai says it is discussing additional licensing agreements with other partners.
That means the available library could grow before the system reaches stores in September 2027.
The companies also plan to hold preview events in different regions during the longer lead up to launch, allowing players to try the hardware before release.
Collector editions and bonuses remain planned
The delay does not currently change the company's plans for special editions and preorder bonuses.
Launch production units are still expected to include the Founding Supporter bonus, while the collector focused Ultimate Edition remains part of the planned production run.
For customers who already placed reservations, the most significant change is therefore the release date rather than pricing or edition availability.
The NeoGeo AES+ is now scheduled to launch worldwide on September 16, 2027, giving its manufacturers nearly another year to secure components, expand production capacity, and potentially add more games to the system's launch lineup.
