Monster Hunter Wilds has received Valve’s Steam Deck Verified badge, confirming that the game now meets the platform’s technical requirements for controls, text readability, default settings, and general compatibility.
That badge does not necessarily mean the experience is ideal. Recent testing shows that Monster Hunter Wilds can now stay around 30 FPS or higher for much of the time on Steam Deck, which is a significant improvement compared with its earlier performance. The larger issue is image quality, with the game relying on aggressive visual reductions to maintain that level of performance.
The result is a version that is technically playable, but one that can look noticeably blurry, pixelated, and stripped of detail.
Performance Has Improved Since Launch
Monster Hunter Wilds previously had a poor reputation on Steam Deck because of inconsistent performance and demanding hardware requirements. The current version appears much more stable.
At the default configuration, the game was able to remain at or above roughly 30 FPS during most testing. Some drops appeared while moving through the open world, but performance generally recovered without remaining unstable for long periods.
Combat also appeared playable, including during several hunts.
| Steam Deck detail | Current result |
|---|---|
| Compatibility rating | Verified |
| Typical performance | Around 30 FPS or higher |
| Controller support | Fully supported |
| Text readability | Meets Verified requirements |
| Default settings | Functional |
| Main weakness | Very low visual quality |
| Steam price | $39.99 |
The improvements suggest that optimization work since launch has made a meaningful difference. Monster Hunter Wilds is now much closer to being practical on the handheld from a frame rate perspective.
The Verified Badge Does Not Measure Visual Quality
The main problem is how much image quality has been sacrificed.
Textures can appear muddy, fine details are heavily reduced, shadows are limited, and the overall presentation can look soft and pixelated. In some scenes, the visual downgrade is severe enough that the game looks noticeably different from versions running on more powerful hardware.
This creates an unusual situation. The Steam Deck Verified badge is technically accurate because Valve’s rating system focuses on compatibility requirements rather than whether a game maintains high visual fidelity.
A title can therefore earn the green Verified badge while still requiring aggressive graphics reductions.

That distinction is important if you use the badge as a buying guide. Verified confirms that the game works properly with the Steam Deck interface and controls, but it does not guarantee that the graphics will look good or that every area will maintain the same performance.
Portable Play May Still Be Useful for Short Sessions
There are situations where this version could still make sense.
Using the Steam Deck for material gathering, grinding, shorter hunts, or other secondary activities could be convenient if you already play Monster Hunter Wilds on another system. Being able to continue progression away from a desktop or console gives the handheld version some practical value.
Playing the entire game this way is a more difficult recommendation. The frame rate is now acceptable in much of the tested content, but the visual compromises are substantial enough that they may reduce the appeal of longer sessions.
Performance could also vary in areas that were not included in the initial testing, so the Verified badge should not be interpreted as proof that every location will hold a perfect 30 FPS.
Monster Hunter Wilds is now genuinely functional on Steam Deck and has improved considerably since release. Its new Verified status reflects that technical progress, but if image quality matters to you, the handheld version still comes with one of the biggest compromises in the experience.
