Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance Gives Longsword Faster Combos and New Counter Attacks

Capcom has finished its Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance weapon showcase series with a detailed look at the Longsword, which is receiving several aggressive new attacks through the expansion’s Boost Bracer system.

The weapon is already known for high damage and counter focused gameplay, but Ascendance pushes it further toward speed and constant pressure. New attacks include an offset counter, faster combo strings, a returning Sacred Sheath Stance and improved versions of existing defensive moves.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Boost Driver adds another powerful counter option

The Longsword’s new Boost Driver attack begins by sheathing the weapon while still allowing the hunter to move.

From there, you can unleash an offset counter against an incoming monster attack. If the counter successfully knocks the monster off balance, it can be followed by a powerful finishing slash.

The mechanic gives Longsword players another way to turn enemy aggression into damage.

Counters have been a major part of the weapon’s identity in recent Monster Hunter games, but the new system appears designed to make those counters flow more naturally into offensive sequences.

Boost Gauge makes the Longsword considerably faster

Activating the Boost Gauge also changes the pace of the weapon.

New combo attacks become available, with some moving quickly enough to approach the speed normally associated with Dual Blades.

One new combo finisher lets the hunter rapidly dash around a monster while landing repeated strikes. The result is a more mobile and aggressive fighting style than the slower counter focused approach traditionally associated with the Longsword.

Foresight Slash also receives an upgrade while Boost Gauge is active, dealing additional damage when used successfully.

That means the expansion is improving both sides of the weapon. Players who prefer defensive timing still gain stronger counters, while those who want to stay close to monsters gain faster offensive tools.

Sacred Sheath Stance returns from Sunbreak

Ascendance also brings back the Sacred Sheath Stance from Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.

The stance allows hunters to charge powerful heavy attacks after sheathing the Longsword, adding another high damage option to the weapon’s expanded moveset.

Its return should be familiar to players who spent time with Sunbreak, while also giving Wilds players another reason to experiment with timing and positioning.

Combined with Boost Driver, faster combos and the improved Foresight Slash, the Longsword looks considerably more flexible than its current version.

The weapon feels more aggressive in Ascendance

The changes appear intended to move Longsword away from relying too heavily on waiting for an enemy attack before responding.

Counters remain important, but the new attacks encourage you to maintain pressure rather than simply holding position and waiting for an opening.

The faster animations and rapid slashing sequences also give the weapon a style closer to Capcom’s recent sword focused action games.

This Longsword reveal closes the current weapon showcase series for Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance. Capcom has already demonstrated changes for the game’s other weapon types, including several major additions tied to the Boost Bracer.

More information may arrive during Tokyo Game Show 2026, which begins on September 17. Ascendance is expected to have its first playable demo there, giving players an opportunity to test the updated weapons and see whether Capcom has kept additional mechanics or balance changes out of the trailers.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance will launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
