Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch with a full set of new multiplayer maps instead of relying on remastered classics. Infinity Ward is taking a different approach this year by tying many of the maps to campaign locations and events, while still giving each arena its own identity for competitive play.
That decision is important because Call of Duty players often debate whether a new entry should bring back nostalgic maps or focus on fresh locations. Modern Warfare 4 is choosing the second path at launch. The maps are designed as parallel combat spaces connected to the campaign, almost as if another fire team is fighting a few streets away from the main story.
The launch map list currently includes Silkworm, Reactor J92, Rooftop, Mumbai, Lithium, Munition, Caschette, Nautical, Lotus, Sentry, Coal, Transit 23, Korean Nuclear Reactor, and Kill Block. The global spread fits Infinity Ward’s view that “globetrotting” remains a core part of Modern Warfare. Players will move from places like South Korea to Mumbai, with the campaign helping shape the multiplayer setting.
Infinity Ward says its map design goals include cleaner sight lines, less visual clutter, and more deliberate engagements. That matters because Modern Warfare maps have sometimes been criticized for making players fight the environment as much as the enemy. This time, the studio appears focused on readability, faster recognition, and clearer combat flow.
| Confirmed launch map | What stands out |
|---|---|
| Silkworm | One of the first maps built around the campaign adjacent concept |
| Lotus | Set around a coastal Korean town |
| Mumbai | Continues the global Modern Warfare setting |
| Korean Nuclear Reactor | Tied to the wider Korean conflict setting |
| Kill Block | Dynamic map with changing round based layouts |
| Rooftop, Coal, Sentry, Nautical, and others | All new maps built for launch |
Kill Block is the most unusual map in the lineup. It is a dynamic map that changes between rounds. Infinity Ward designed it around three large battlefield slabs, with the center “hero slab” acting as the anchor. The inspiration came from the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid, which can move its pitch underground through a complex system.
The result is a map that can rotate into different layouts during round based matches. Infinity Ward says it has enough assets to create more than 900 possible slab combinations, though the launch version is expected to include around 500 live combinations. More may come after launch, including possible callbacks to older Modern Warfare locations.

Kill Block has the same general footprint as Shoot House, which should make it attractive to players who like small, fast, risky maps. It is built for quick engagements and will support all core multiplayer modes at launch.
Modern Warfare 4’s confirmed modes include Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Counter Attack, Inflation, Hijack, Gunfight 10v10, party modes, Gun Game, Drop Zone, Big War, Combat Outposts, and Frontal Assault.
| Mode | Main idea |
|---|---|
| Team Deathmatch | Classic team based elimination mode |
| Domination | Objective control across fixed points |
| Hardpoint | Rotating objective combat |
| Kill Confirmed | Collect tags after eliminations |
| Inflation | Six player teams fight over cash dropped by defeated players |
| Gunfight 10v10 | Larger round based Gunfight on Kill Block |
| Big War | Larger scale multiplayer mode |
| Party modes and Gun Game | Casual and rotating fun modes |
Inflation is one of the new ideas. It plays like a six versus six fight built around cash drops. Eliminated players drop money that can be picked up for the team total, while players carrying more cash become higher value targets. The team with the most cash at the end wins.
Gunfight 10v10 also changes the usual Gunfight formula. Players still receive randomized loadouts, but now two teams of ten fight on Kill Block, with the map also changing between rounds. That should make the mode chaotic, especially for players who rush too aggressively and get knocked out early.
The full picture suggests Infinity Ward is trying to make Modern Warfare 4 feel familiar without making it safe. The classic modes are still here, but the new maps, dynamic layout system, and fresh modes give multiplayer a stronger identity at launch.
There is still more to learn before the October 23 release, but the early multiplayer details are promising. Modern Warfare 4 is launching with new maps, a stronger focus on readability, and a mix of traditional and experimental modes. If Infinity Ward can keep the map flow clean and the mode rotation balanced, this could be one of the more confident Modern Warfare multiplayer launches in years.
