Microsoft’s new 8GB versions of the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch are cheaper than their higher-memory counterparts, but they also lose Copilot+ PC status. That means they do not support features such as Recall, Click to Do, Windows Studio Effects, Live Captions with translations, and other AI tools tied to Microsoft’s newer PC category.
For some buyers, that may not be a major drawback. The new Surface models still run Windows 11, use Snapdragon processors, and offer the same basic Surface design and portability. They are simply aimed at people who want a lighter, more affordable laptop or tablet without paying extra for AI-focused features they may never use.
The move comes as memory prices remain high across the PC industry. Several manufacturers have returned to 8GB configurations to keep laptop prices from rising even further, and Microsoft is now doing the same with its Surface lineup.
Why the New Surface Models Are Not Copilot+ PCs
Microsoft requires Copilot+ PCs to have at least 16GB of RAM. Because these new Surface models ship with only 8GB, they do not meet the memory requirement for the Copilot+ label.
As a result, several Windows AI features will not be included.
| Copilot+ feature | Available on 8GB Surface models |
|---|---|
| Recall | No |
| Click to Do | No |
| Windows Studio Effects | No |
| Live Captions with translations | No |
| Cocreator tools | No |
| Copilot+ PC branding | No |
That may sound like a long list of missing features, but the practical impact depends on how you use your PC.
Recall, for example, captures snapshots of on-screen activity so you can search through previous work later. Some people find that useful, while others do not want it running on their device at all. Click to Do and AI image tools may be helpful in certain workflows, but they are not essential for basic web browsing, email, streaming, schoolwork, or office documents.
For buyers who prefer a cleaner Windows experience with fewer background AI tools, the lack of Copilot+ features could even be an advantage.
8GB of RAM Is Still Usable for Everyday Windows 11 Tasks
Many people treat 8GB of RAM as unusable in 2026, but that is not always accurate. It depends on the type of work you expect from the device.

An 8GB Surface Pro or Surface Laptop should be suitable for everyday tasks such as browsing with a reasonable number of tabs, watching videos, using Microsoft Office, attending video calls, editing documents, and managing email.
It will not be the right option for demanding workloads. Heavy multitasking, large Photoshop files, 4K video editing, virtual machines, local AI tools, modern PC gaming, and professional creative software will quickly expose the limits of 8GB memory.
| Type of use | 8GB Surface suitability |
|---|---|
| Web browsing and streaming | Good |
| Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email | Good |
| Online classes and video calls | Good |
| Light photo editing | Acceptable |
| Large creative projects | Not recommended |
| Modern gaming | Not recommended |
| Local AI workloads | Not recommended |
The new models are best viewed as entry-level Surface devices, not replacements for premium laptops with 16GB or 32GB of RAM.
Microsoft May Be Moving Away From Heavy Copilot+ Branding
The new 8GB Surface models also raise a broader question about Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC strategy.
When Copilot+ PCs first launched, Microsoft presented the label as a major shift for Windows hardware. More recently, the branding has become less visible on some newer systems, even when the devices technically meet the requirements.
That may reflect a simple reality: many people choose laptops based on price, battery life, screen quality, weight, keyboard comfort, and performance before they think about AI features.
AI tools can be useful when they are easy to ignore or remove. Problems begin when they feel forced into the operating system or become the main reason to buy a device.
A Lower Price May Matter More Than Missing AI Features
The biggest reason these Surface models exist is likely price. Memory costs have increased, and manufacturers are looking for ways to keep entry-level laptops affordable.
For someone who wants a compact Windows laptop or tablet for general daily use, a lower-priced Surface with 8GB of RAM may be more practical than a more expensive model loaded with AI features they do not need.
Microsoft has not accidentally created a better Surface for everyone. Buyers who need strong multitasking performance should still choose a model with at least 16GB of RAM.
But for people who want a simple, portable Windows device and would rather avoid Copilot+ features, the new 8GB Surface Pro and Surface Laptop may be a surprisingly sensible option.
