Microsoft Surface Pro 13 and Surface Laptop 8 Leak With Snapdragon X2 Chips

Microsoft’s next consumer Surface Pro 13 and Surface Laptop 8 models have leaked ahead of an expected June 16 announcement, pointing to new Snapdragon X2 processors, stronger AI performance, and familiar chassis designs. The leak covers both the Surface tablet and the next Surface Laptop lineup, with ARM based models aimed at Copilot Plus PC features and long battery life.

The Surface Pro 13 is expected to keep the same general design as the current model. That means a tablet body with a built in kickstand, detachable keyboard support, and relatively wide bezels around the display. The main changes appear to be inside, where Microsoft is reportedly moving to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Elite processor.

The tablet is said to feature a 13 inch OLED touchscreen and a 12 core Snapdragon X2 Elite chip. The processor is paired with an NPU rated at up to 80 TOPS, which should give Microsoft more room for local AI features in Windows and Copilot Plus PC workloads.

The Surface Pro 13 is also expected to support up to 32GB of RAM and a user replaceable PCIe 4.0 SSD with up to 1TB of storage. Microsoft reportedly claims up to 15.5 hours of local video playback. Color options are listed as Black, Platinum, and Dune, while the previous blue option appears to be missing.

Surface Laptop 8 may arrive in two sizes with Snapdragon X2 Elite and Plus options

The leak also includes the Surface Laptop 8, which is expected to launch in 13.8 inch and 15 inch sizes. These are said to be consumer ARM models, while Intel versions are already available for business customers.

Microsoft is reportedly preparing configurations with the Snapdragon X2 Elite X2E 78 100 and Snapdragon X2 Plus X2P 64 100. The Elite model is listed with 12 CPU cores, while the Plus version has 10 CPU cores. Both chips are said to boost up to 4.0 GHz and include an NPU rated at up to 80 TOPS.

The Surface Laptop 8 models are expected to include user replaceable SSDs with 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB capacities. The 13.8 inch version is reportedly listed with a 54Wh battery and up to 20 hours of local video playback. The larger 15 inch model is said to use a 66Wh battery and offer up to 19 hours.

Microsoft is also expected to add a new Jade color option for the Surface Laptop 8. It would join Platinum, Gold or Dune, and Black. The chassis design and port selection are reportedly unchanged, which suggests Microsoft is focusing this refresh on processor, battery, and AI performance rather than a full redesign.

Snapdragon X2 could be the biggest upgrade

The main story is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 platform. The first wave of Snapdragon X powered Surface devices helped Microsoft push Windows on Arm more seriously, but the next generation needs to improve performance, app compatibility, battery life, and AI acceleration to keep the momentum going.

An 80 TOPS NPU would give Microsoft more headroom for local AI processing. That matters because Copilot Plus PC features are increasingly tied to on device AI acceleration rather than cloud only processing. Tasks such as image generation, background effects, recall style search, language tools, and other AI features can benefit from stronger NPU performance.

The Surface Laptop 8 could also become more attractive if Microsoft keeps the same slim design while improving battery life and performance. A 20 hour local video playback claim for the 13.8 inch model would be strong on paper, although real world results will depend on screen brightness, workload, browser use, and background apps.

The user replaceable SSDs are also worth noting. Many compact premium laptops still limit storage upgrades, so keeping replaceable drives would be useful for buyers who want more flexibility or easier repairs.

Pricing will decide how competitive these Surface models feel

Pricing has not leaked yet, but higher prices are expected because of storage costs. That could become a key issue. Surface devices already sit in the premium category, and Snapdragon X2 models will need to compete with Apple’s MacBook lineup, Intel Lunar Lake and Panther Lake laptops, and AMD’s latest Ryzen AI systems.

For the Surface Pro 13, the question is whether the unchanged tablet design still feels fresh enough in 2026. A better chip and OLED display help, but the keyboard and accessories will likely remain important parts of the total price.

For the Surface Laptop 8, the question is easier: if performance and battery life improve enough, the familiar design may still work. Microsoft’s laptop line has always leaned on build quality, keyboard feel, display quality, and clean Windows integration rather than aggressive redesigns.

The leaked specs suggest Microsoft is preparing a focused ARM refresh rather than a dramatic hardware overhaul. The Surface Pro 13 and Surface Laptop 8 may look familiar, but the Snapdragon X2 platform, stronger NPU, replaceable storage, and new color options could make them meaningful updates for buyers interested in Copilot Plus PCs.

Both devices are expected to be announced on June 16. If the leak is accurate, Microsoft’s next consumer Surface launch will be less about new shapes and more about pushing Windows on Arm into its second major performance cycle.
