Microsoft has started automatically upgrading compatible Windows 11 Home and Pro PCs to version 25H2, including systems still running older releases such as Windows 11 23H2. The update is no longer optional for most consumer devices that are not managed by an organisation or IT department.
The rollout is designed to move more PCs onto a supported version of Windows 11 before Windows 11 26H2 arrives later this year. Microsoft is using its machine learning based update system to gradually push version 25H2 to eligible devices, even when users have not manually chosen to install it.
For most PCs, the update should be relatively quick. Windows 11 25H2 shares its core code with the earlier 24H2 release, which means it is delivered more like an enablement update than a full operating system reinstall.
Windows 11 23H2 PCs Are Included in the Mandatory Rollout
Until now, Windows 11 25H2 was mainly offered as an optional update for devices already running Windows 11 24H2. That has changed.
Microsoft is now targeting Home and Pro PCs running older Windows 11 versions as well. This includes devices still using Windows 11 23H2, which reached the end of support in November 2025.
The change does not apply in the same way to business systems managed by IT departments. Companies can use their own update policies, deployment schedules, and management tools to control when major Windows updates are installed.
| Device type | Windows 11 25H2 rollout |
|---|---|
| Windows 11 Home PCs | Automatic rollout |
| Windows 11 Pro PCs not managed by IT | Automatic rollout |
| Windows 11 23H2 devices | Included if compatible |
| Windows 11 24H2 devices | Eligible for the update |
| Business PCs managed by IT | Controlled by organisation policies |
For regular home users, the update will arrive through Windows Update as part of Microsoft’s usual staged rollout.
Why Microsoft Wants More PCs on Windows 11 25H2
The main reason for the mandatory upgrade appears to be Windows 11 26H2.
Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 11 26H2 will use the same underlying code base as Windows 11 25H2. That means moving from 25H2 to 26H2 should require only a small enablement package that unlocks newer features already included in the operating system.

This approach allows Microsoft to avoid making every future feature update feel like a large Windows installation. It can also reduce installation time, lower the risk of major compatibility problems, and make it easier for users to stay on a supported release.
Updating to Windows 11 25H2 also gives eligible PCs another 12 months of support. That is important because unsupported Windows versions stop receiving regular security fixes, stability improvements, and compatibility updates.
The Update Should Only Need One Restart
Because Windows 11 25H2 is closely related to 24H2, Microsoft expects the installation process to take only a few minutes on many PCs.
The update should need one restart, rather than the longer setup process often associated with major Windows version upgrades. However, installation time can still vary depending on your PC hardware, storage speed, internet connection, and whether Windows needs to install other pending updates first.
You may notice the update downloading automatically in Windows Update. In some cases, Windows will wait until your device is idle before preparing the installation.
How to Check Whether Windows 11 25H2 Is Available
You can check manually by opening Settings, selecting Windows Update, and choosing Check for updates.
If Windows 11 25H2 is offered to your PC, you can install it immediately rather than waiting for the automatic rollout. Some devices may not see the update straight away because Microsoft is distributing it in stages.
If it is not available yet, make sure your PC has current updates installed and that it meets Windows 11 compatibility requirements.
Microsoft’s decision to force Windows 11 25H2 on consumer PCs may frustrate people who prefer to control every system update. However, the update is intended to bring older systems back onto a supported version and prepare them for the smaller Windows 11 26H2 upgrade later in 2026.
