Metal Gear Solid 5 Mod Brings Back Classic On Site Procurement

A new Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain mod is changing how players approach missions by bringing back one of the series’ older design ideas: entering enemy territory with little or no equipment and finding what you need in the field.

The mod, called Definitive Subsistence, is built around On Site Procurement, or OSP. This concept was central to earlier Metal Gear games, where Snake often started a mission with minimal gear and had to locate weapons, tools and supplies while infiltrating enemy areas.

Metal Gear Solid 5 moved away from that structure by allowing players to develop and deploy with a large collection of weapons and equipment through Mother Base. The new mod aims to restore more of the older survival and infiltration feel without removing the game’s open world systems.

Missions can now begin without a standard weapon loadout

One of the biggest technical changes is the removal of the usual requirement to equip a weapon before starting a mission.

Metal Gear Solid 5 normally expects you to select a loadout before deployment. Definitive Subsistence changes that structure so you can enter an operation without relying on gear developed at Mother Base.

That makes the beginning of each mission more important. Instead of arriving with a preferred rifle, sidearm and collection of support tools, you may need to assess the area and work with whatever you can find.

The mod then supports that design by making standard weapons available in the world.

Enemies can carry equipment that you can take, while weapons can also be placed around mission areas. This brings the experience closer to the original Metal Gear Solid, where finding equipment inside Shadow Moses was a major part of progression.

Older Metal Gear ideas return in a modern open world

The mod also restores mechanics inspired by earlier games.

Enemies can drop equipment, and defeated soldiers can be searched for useful items. That adds another reason to interact with guards instead of treating them only as obstacles.

Support systems have also been adjusted. Radios placed around the world can be used to call buddies such as D Dog, D Horse and Quiet.

This keeps some of Metal Gear Solid 5’s broader support mechanics available while making them feel more connected to what you find during the mission.

More characters and equipment become usable

Definitive Subsistence is not limited to changing mission preparation.

The mod adds new bionic arms and makes some weapons available in main missions even though they were previously restricted.

It also allows multiplayer exclusive characters such as Ocelot and Quiet to be used in the open world.

Players who prefer the original Phantom Pain structure are not forced to abandon it. Developed weapons can still be deployed normally, so the mod supports both the classic OSP style and the standard Mother Base loadout system.

The result is a different way to replay Metal Gear Solid 5. Instead of beginning every mission fully prepared, Definitive Subsistence encourages improvisation, scavenging and adaptation, bringing the open world game closer to the design philosophy of the earlier Metal Gear titles.
