Marathon Delays Symbiosis Update to December 8 and Moves Away From Seasons

Marathon is changing its post launch structure, with Bungie delaying the next major content update and moving away from the seasonal model it had previously planned.

The upcoming Symbiosis update will now launch on December 8 instead of September 22. Bungie says the change is intended to give the development team more flexibility to build, test and improve features before releasing them.

The shift also means Marathon will no longer organize major updates around traditional seasons. Future content will instead arrive on a schedule based more closely on development progress and player feedback.

Symbiosis adds a permanent PvE experience

The largest change in Symbiosis is the addition of Marathon's first permanent PvE mode.

Details remain limited, but the mode is intended to give players another way to explore the world, progress and engage with the game outside its traditional PvPvE extraction structure.

That is a meaningful change for Marathon because the game has so far been built primarily around competitive extraction gameplay. A permanent PvE option could make the experience more approachable for players who prefer fighting AI enemies without dealing with rival squads at the same time.

Symbiosis will also introduce a refreshed version of Perimeter, a new Runner Shell and improved onboarding for new players.

An experimental Team Deathmatch mode is also planned, giving the development team another opportunity to test ideas beyond the extraction format.

New social space will double as a firing range

Another major addition is a dedicated social area that also serves as a firing range.

This should give players a place to meet, test weapons and prepare before entering matches. It also represents another step toward making Marathon feel like a broader online game rather than a collection of isolated extraction sessions.

Bungie describes Symbiosis as an important milestone and the start of a larger evolution that will continue into March 2027 and beyond.

The studio plans to use player feedback from these changes to shape later updates.

October update will arrive before Symbiosis

Marathon will still receive new content before December.

An October 6 update is scheduled to include a progression and economy reset, balance changes and a new Rewards Pass. Vault Breaker is also returning.

Bungie says it will continue running gameplay experiments during this period, although specific details have not yet been announced.

The development team also plans to publish a more detailed update later this month explaining how Marathon will evolve into what it describes as a more alien and dynamic survival experience.

That suggests the move away from seasons is part of a wider rethink of the game's structure rather than a simple scheduling change.

Marathon launched earlier this year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. The game has struggled to build strong momentum since release, making the Symbiosis update an important test of whether broader modes, easier onboarding and a more flexible content strategy can attract and retain a larger audience.
