ImgDrive 2.2.8.0 is now available with new disc emulation options for protected media and a fix that removes an unnecessary delay when changing mounted image files. The update is small, but it improves compatibility for people who use virtual drives to access ISO files, Blu-ray images, and other disc formats without burning them to physical media.
ImgDrive is a lightweight CD, DVD, and Blu-ray emulator for Windows. It lets you mount disc images directly from File Explorer, creating virtual drives that behave like physical optical drives.
The program supports common formats such as ISO, CUE, NRG, MDS, MDF, CCD, and ISZ. It can also mount certain audio files as virtual audio CDs and turn folders into virtual DVD or Blu-ray discs.
ImgDrive 2.2.8 Adds New Emulation Features
The latest version adds support for emulating bus encryption and protected 4K BDAV discs. These improvements are mainly aimed at advanced disc image use cases, especially Blu-ray video structures that may use additional protection methods.
For most people mounting standard ISO files, the update will not dramatically change everyday use. However, it could make ImgDrive more useful for collections that include protected Blu-ray images or more complex disc formats.
| New change | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bus encryption emulation | Improves support for protected disc environments |
| 4K BDAV disc emulation | Adds support for protected Ultra HD Blu-ray video discs |
| Faster image replacement | Removes a five-second delay when changing mounted files |
The fix for image switching is likely to be the most noticeable improvement for regular users. Previously, changing the disc image in an already mounted virtual drive could require waiting around five seconds. Version 2.2.8 removes that delay.
ImgDrive Supports Multiple Virtual Drives
ImgDrive can create up to seven virtual drives at the same time. That can be useful if you work with multiple installation discs, archived software images, old game media, or several Blu-ray and DVD structures.
The tool also supports multi-session disc images, which can matter for older CD and DVD archives created with software such as Nero or CloneCD.
| Supported file type | Typical use |
|---|---|
| ISO | Standard CD, DVD and Blu-ray images |
| CUE | Audio and mixed-mode disc images |
| NRG | Nero disc image files |
| MDS and MDF | Media descriptor and disc data images |
| CCD | CloneCD images |
| ISZ | Compressed ISO images |
ImgDrive can also mount APE, FLAC, M4A, WAV, WavPack, TTA, and other compatible audio files as virtual audio CDs. This may be useful for software or hardware that expects a traditional CD layout rather than standard audio files.
Portable Version Remains Available
One of ImgDrive’s useful features is its portable version. You can run it without a normal installation, which can be helpful on systems where you do not have administrator rights or when you want to keep a small toolkit on a USB drive.

The main download is under 1MB, making it much smaller than many full virtual drive suites. It supports both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows versions and does not require a restart after installation.
ImgDrive 2.2.8 is a modest maintenance update, but the new emulation features and faster image switching make it worth installing for people who regularly work with disc images.
