Hytale gets controller support as Steam Deck play becomes much easier

Hytale has taken a major step toward becoming a better handheld game with the arrival of its first controller support update. Update 5 adds an early version of controller support, making the voxel sandbox RPG more comfortable to play on Steam Deck and other controller based setups.

This is not the final version of controller support, and players should expect a few rough edges. The team originally wanted to wait until the game had a more controller friendly interface before shipping the feature. Instead, it decided to release a temporary version now so players would not have to keep waiting.

That was probably the right call. Hytale already works well on Steam Deck, but a sandbox RPG like this needs proper controller support to feel natural on a handheld. Using keyboard and mouse style controls on the go can work, but it often feels like a workaround. Native controller support makes exploration, combat, building, and general movement much easier to enjoy away from a desk.

Controller support is early, but the roadmap sounds promising

The current implementation works with the existing interface, which means some menus or advanced actions may still feel better with a keyboard and mouse. The developers are already working on a cleaner controller focused UI, which should improve the flow in future updates.

The bigger news is what comes next. The team plans to expand controller compatibility with features such as gyro aiming and Steam Input support. For Steam Deck players, Steam Input could be especially important because it allows deeper control customization, community layouts, trackpad use, and better handheld specific tuning.

Hytale Update 5 featureWhy it matters
First controller support passMakes handheld play more practical
Future controller UI workShould improve menus and navigation
Planned gyro aimingUseful for Steam Deck and handheld players
Planned Steam Input supportEnables better custom controls
Server discovery toolHelps players find worlds more easily
Social sidebarMakes it easier to stay connected with friends

Update 5 also brings several major changes beyond controller support. A new Trigger Volume Tool lets modders create scripted encounters, which could become important for custom adventures and community made content. Hytale has always depended heavily on player creativity, so giving modders better tools should help the game grow.

The new social sidebar also makes sense for a game built around shared worlds. Players can stay connected with friends more easily, while the server discovery tool should make it simpler to find new places to play. That matters because sandbox games live or die by their communities. If finding servers is difficult, new players are less likely to stay.

The update also adds audio occlusion and diffraction, which should make sound feel more natural depending on the environment. Creative mode now has new placement settings, and the game also gets new emotes plus more than an hour of new music.

Hytale is currently available for $19.99 through its official website, with a Linux AppImage available after purchase. That is useful for Steam Deck players because it gives them a direct way to install and play the game on Valve’s handheld.

The most important takeaway is simple. Hytale is becoming more comfortable to play without a keyboard and mouse. Controller support is still early, but it already makes the game more portable friendly, and the promise of Steam Input and gyro support could make the Steam Deck experience much better over time.

For a game built around exploration, creativity, and long play sessions, that matters. Hytale is not just getting another control option. It is becoming easier to play wherever you want.
