HP has launched the OmniBook 3 17 with Intel's new Wildcat Lake processors, giving buyers another option in the increasingly limited market for large 17 inch laptops.
The new model uses a 17.3 inch display and can be configured with the Intel Core 5 315, Core 5 320 or Core 7 350. All three processors feature six CPU cores.
HP is offering several memory, storage and battery configurations, although the display specifications are relatively modest for a laptop starting near the $1,000 mark.

Wildcat Lake is the main upgrade
The processor options are the most notable part of the new OmniBook 3 17.
HP offers three Wildcat Lake chips, beginning with the Core 5 315 and extending to the Core 7 350. Despite the different model numbers, each uses six CPU cores.
The laptop can be configured with between 8GB and 32GB of DDR5 5600 memory.
HP is using a single memory module rather than a dual channel configuration, which may limit memory bandwidth compared with systems using two modules.
Storage starts at 256GB, with 512GB and 1TB SSD options also available.
Display choices are fairly basic
The 17.3 inch screen gives the OmniBook 3 17 plenty of physical workspace, but the available panels are not particularly advanced.
The entry option uses a 1600 x 900 TN display rated at 250 nits.
HP also offers 1920 x 1080 IPS panels with brightness reaching 300 nits. Touchscreen versions are available for both resolution options.
The Full HD IPS panel covers 62.5 percent of the sRGB color space.
That level of color coverage makes the laptop better suited to everyday productivity, web browsing and general office use than color sensitive creative work.
The display specifications may also be difficult to justify for some buyers considering the system's original $999 starting price.
Battery and connectivity options vary by configuration
HP offers two battery capacities.
The smaller option is rated at 41Wh, while higher configurations can use a 68Wh battery.
Wireless connectivity can reach WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0, depending on the selected configuration.
These options give buyers some flexibility between lower cost models and versions with stronger battery and connectivity specifications.
HP is not alone in offering 17 inch Wildcat Lake laptops
Several manufacturers have already introduced similar large screen systems based on Intel Wildcat Lake.
Lenovo's IdeaPad Slim 3 17IWC11 includes a 17.3 inch 1080p IPS display, Wildcat Lake processors including the Core 5 320, and support for up to 32GB of DDR5 5600 memory.
ASUS has also refreshed its Vivobook 17 X1704.
That model can be configured with the Core 3 304, Core 5 315, Core 5 320 or Core 7 350. Its 17.3 inch display uses a 1920 x 1080 resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate.
HP originally listed the OmniBook 3 17 at $999 with a Core 5 315, 8GB of memory and a 256GB SSD.
However, discounted custom configurations are already appearing, which could make the system more competitive. The Wildcat Lake processors and large display are its main attractions, while the basic panel options and single module memory configuration remain important compromises to consider before buying.
