You can remove a chat from your Chat list, delete your own messages, or leave a group chat. Most issues happen when people try to “erase the whole conversation for everyone” (not possible) or when org policies block deletion.
The fix: use Delete chat (removes it from your view only), Hide if you just want it out of sight, or Leave for noisy group threads.
Before you start
- Delete chat removes the thread from your Chat list only. Other participants still keep their copy.
- You can only delete your own messages; you can’t delete others’ messages.
- Your organization’s retention/compliance policies may disable deletion.
- Cleaning up? Also review meeting workflows: schedule a meeting, record a meeting, share your screen, keep video tidy with background effects, organize people via groups/teams, set expectations with out of office, and compare tools with Teams Free vs Slack.
1) Delete an entire chat from your list (desktop/web)
- Go to Chat (left rail).
- Right-click the conversation → select Delete.
- Confirm Delete. The chat disappears from your list.
Visual cue: In the Chat list, right-click a thread to open the context menu; look for a trash can next to Delete.
Alternative: Open the chat → Chat header → More (⋯) → Delete chat → Delete.
2) Delete a chat on mobile (iPhone/Android)
- Open Chat.
- Tap-and-hold the conversation → tap Delete → confirm.
Visual cue: After the long press, a bottom sheet shows Delete, Hide, Pin, etc.
3) Hide a chat (keeps history, just out of sight)
- Desktop/web: Right-click the chat → Hide.
- Mobile: Tap-and-hold → Hide.
- Unhide/restore: Search the person/group in the Search bar and send a new message—the chat reappears.
Use when: You might need the chat later but don’t want it pinned to the list.
4) Leave a group chat (stop new messages)
- Open the group chat.
- In the Chat header, select View and add participants (people icon).
- Select Leave → confirm.
Visual cue: In the participant pane, Leave sits near the bottom of options.
Note: Members who remain still see the history. You can be re-added later.
5) Delete your messages inside a chat
Desktop/web:
- Hover your message → More (⋯) → Delete (trash can).
- (Optional) Select Undo right away if you removed it by mistake.
Mobile:
- Tap-and-hold your message → Delete → confirm.
Tip: Use Edit (pencil) for quick fixes without removing the whole message.
6) Pin, mute, or mark unread instead of deleting
- Pin: Keep key threads at the top (right-click → Pin).
- Mute: Silence notifications (right-click → Mute)—great for busy project chats.
- Mark as unread: Right-click a chat → Mark as unread to return later.
Troubleshooting
- Delete option missing: Your tenant’s policy or retention settings may block it. Use Hide or ask IT.
- Chat keeps coming back: Someone messages you again. Delete removes it now, but new messages recreate the thread. Use Mute or Leave (for group chats).
- Can’t delete others’ messages: By design. Ask an owner/mod to remove content in moderated channels, or request policy changes.
- Need to remove files too: Files shared in chats live in OneDrive; delete from the file’s location if necessary (access permitting).
FAQs
Does deleting a chat notify others?
No. It only affects your view.
Can I delete channel conversations the same way?
No. Channel posts live in a team; owners/moderators and policies govern removal.
Can I wipe history for everyone?
No. You can delete your own messages; others keep theirs unless an admin/policy removes them.
