Horizon Steel Frontiers moves to 2027 as NCSOFT keeps Cinder City on track for 2026

NCSOFT has moved Horizon Steel Frontiers to the first half of 2027, pushing the Horizon based MMORPG beyond the 2026 window that had previously been suggested. The new timing appeared in the company’s latest investor presentation, although it is still unclear whether the launch window refers to a global release or an initial Korean debut.

The delay is not a huge surprise, but it does change expectations around one of NCSOFT’s most high profile upcoming games. Horizon Steel Frontiers was first rumored years ago and was officially revealed in November 2025 as a full MMORPG for PC and mobile. At the time, NCSOFT suggested the project was moving well enough that a 2026 launch looked possible.

That is no longer the plan. The game now appears to need more time, which may be the safer choice for a project carrying both the Horizon name and the pressure of entering the MMO market. A live service role playing game needs strong systems at launch, especially when it is tied to a major Sony and Guerrilla Games franchise.

Horizon Steel Frontiers is set in a region called the Deadlands, an open world inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. The game takes place during the same general period as Aloy’s story in the north, around the time of Horizon Forbidden West. NCSOFT has not confirmed whether Aloy or other major characters from the mainline games will appear.

The project is being made with close involvement from Guerrilla Games, which should help the MMO stay closer to the identity of the Horizon universe. That matters because Horizon’s appeal comes from more than robot dinosaurs. Its world, tribes, machines, ruins, and post apocalyptic mystery all need to feel consistent if the MMO is going to satisfy existing fans.

NCSOFT has already confirmed that Horizon Steel Frontiers will include towns, guilds, and raids. Those details suggest the company is building a full online RPG rather than a simple mobile spinoff. That also explains why more development time may be needed. Translating Horizon’s action combat and machine hunting into an MMO structure is not a small task.

The platform question is still open. Horizon Steel Frontiers is confirmed for PC and mobile, and NCSOFT has said it would like to bring the game to PlayStation 5. However, that decision would depend on Sony. Given Horizon’s close connection to PlayStation, a PS5 version would make sense, but it has not been confirmed.

NCSOFT also acknowledged earlier that AI tools have been used extensively during development. That detail may attract attention, especially as more studios use AI for production support. The important question will be whether the final game feels polished, authored, and faithful to the Horizon world rather than simply efficient to produce.

The delay also leaves Cinder City as one of NCSOFT’s key 2026 releases. The MMO shooter remains scheduled for the second half of 2026, alongside Time Takers, LIMIT ZERO BREAKERS, and the global release of AION 2. That gives the publisher a busy year even without Horizon Steel Frontiers.

Looking further ahead, NCSOFT’s roadmap also lists Astrae Oratio, a newly announced subculture RPG, plus the cyberpunk shooter DEFECT and an FPS project codenamed Bonfire. The company is clearly trying to diversify beyond its traditional MMO base, with shooters, anime style action games, mobile projects, and licensed online worlds all in development.

For Horizon Steel Frontiers, the move to 2027 may be disappointing, but it could be necessary. A Horizon MMO has potential, but it also carries risk. Fans will expect meaningful machine battles, a strong world, good progression, and multiplayer systems that do not weaken the tone of the franchise.

The new launch window gives NCSOFT and Guerrilla more time to get that balance right. If the extra time leads to a stronger game, the delay will be easier to accept. For now, Horizon Steel Frontiers remains one of NCSOFT’s biggest future bets, while Cinder City and the rest of its 2026 lineup carry the company’s near term release schedule.
