Holstin Brings Perspective Switching Survival Horror to Xbox Game Pass in 2027

Holstin is an upcoming survival horror game that combines a 1990s Polish setting, pixel art visuals and a perspective switching system that lets you move between top down and third person views during gameplay.

The game is scheduled to launch in 2027 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC through Steam and GOG. It will also arrive on Xbox Game Pass on day one and support Xbox Play Anywhere.

The story takes place in a corrupted Polish town

Holstin follows a protagonist searching for his missing friend Bartek in the small eastern Polish town of Jeziorne Kolonia.

By the time you arrive, the town has been overtaken by a supernatural force. Buildings are being transformed by disturbing organic growths, while many residents have become hostile creatures.

Survival involves scavenging supplies, finding weapons, solving puzzles and gathering information from the few remaining sane people in the area.

The setting is one of the game's clearest distinguishing features. Rather than using a familiar American or Japanese horror backdrop, Holstin leans heavily into Eastern European architecture, culture and atmosphere.

Its presentation mixes 2D pixel art with 3D environments, giving the game a retro appearance without limiting how the world can be explored.

Perspective switching changes exploration and combat

Holstin's most unusual mechanic is its ability to switch between top down and third person perspectives instantly.

You might explore streets and buildings from an overhead view, then switch to third person when aiming a firearm or dealing with enemies at close range.

The perspective can then be changed again when you need a wider view of the environment, such as when avoiding attacks or navigating around obstacles.

The switch happens directly during gameplay rather than through a settings menu, allowing the perspective itself to become part of how encounters are approached.

That flexibility could help separate Holstin from other retro inspired survival horror games that commit to a fixed camera style.

Combat is only one part of survival

Although firearms play an important role, Holstin is not presented as a straightforward action game.

Resource management, exploration and puzzle solving are central to progression. The player will need to search the town for supplies while deciding when combat is worth the cost of ammunition and other resources.

The ability to talk with surviving residents also suggests that investigation will play an important role alongside combat.

The combination of its Polish setting, grotesque visual design and flexible camera system gives Holstin a distinctive identity within a crowded survival horror genre.

With a 2027 release planned and Xbox Game Pass availability confirmed from launch, the game will have a relatively low barrier to entry for Xbox players. Its Steam demo also means you can already test the core concept before deciding whether its unusual mixture of perspectives and retro horror works for you.
