Heroes of the Storm Gets Its First New Hero in Years With Xal'atath

Blizzard is giving Heroes of the Storm its first major character addition in years, with Xal'atath from World of Warcraft joining the roster later this month.

The new hero will arrive on the public test realm on Monday before a wider release planned for late September. Her addition marks the first new playable character since Hogger launched in December 2020.

Blizzard has stopped short of calling this a full revival of Heroes of the Storm. Future updates will depend partly on how players respond to Xal'atath and the renewed activity around the game.

Xal'atath brings a major Warcraft villain into the Nexus

Xal'atath is one of the central antagonists in the current World of Warcraft storyline.

Her history remains deliberately mysterious, but she has become one of the most powerful threats facing Azeroth. Her abilities are tied heavily to the Void, and her actions have included the destruction of Dalaran.

That makes her a natural fit for Heroes of the Storm, which combines characters from several Blizzard franchises.

The existing roster already includes heroes and villains from Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, Overwatch and other Blizzard properties.

Xal'atath's arrival expands that crossover concept at a time when the game has gone several years without a new playable character.

Heroes of the Storm entered maintenance mode years ago

Heroes of the Storm originally launched as Blizzard's entry into the MOBA genre.

The game was designed to be more approachable than competitors such as League of Legends. It removed some traditional MOBA systems, including individual item purchasing, and placed more emphasis on team based objectives.

That helped give the game a distinct identity, but it never reached the same level of popularity as the biggest games in the genre.

Blizzard eventually reduced development significantly.

After Hogger arrived in December 2020, Heroes of the Storm moved into maintenance mode. Updates largely focused on bug fixes and occasional balance changes rather than new heroes, maps or major systems.

The arrival of Xal'atath therefore represents a meaningful change, even if Blizzard is currently keeping expectations limited.

Blizzard is testing interest before committing further

The company has indicated that Xal'atath should not be seen as confirmation of a complete return to regular development.

Instead, the character appears to function partly as a test of how much interest still exists around Heroes of the Storm.

A strong response could potentially justify additional heroes or larger updates.

That approach makes sense for a game that still has a dedicated community but has received limited active development for several years.

The broader games industry has also shown increasing interest in returning to older titles through remasters, expansions and unexpected updates.

A wider crossover could give the game another direction

Heroes of the Storm already works as a shared universe for Blizzard properties, but Microsoft's ownership of Blizzard creates possibilities that did not exist during the game's original development period.

Future crossover characters could theoretically come from franchises outside Blizzard.

Characters such as Master Chief, Doom Slayer or other Xbox owned heroes could fit the game's crossover structure if Blizzard chose to expand it.

A console version could also open the game to a wider audience, although Blizzard has announced no such plans.

For now, Xal'atath is the only confirmed new addition.

Her release will provide an early indication of whether the existing community and returning players still have enough interest to support a larger comeback.

After nearly six years without a new hero, even one new character represents a notable shift for Heroes of the Storm. Whether it becomes the beginning of regular development again will depend on how players respond over the coming months.
