Guild Wars 3 has officially been announced, with ArenaNet confirming the next major entry in the MMO series during Summer Game Fest 2026. The game is being built as an action adventure MMORPG and is planned for PC and PlayStation 5, making it the first main Guild Wars title designed for console as well as PC.
The new entry is not a direct sequel set after Guild Wars 2. Instead, Guild Wars 3 is a prequel that takes place more than 1,000 years before the original game. The setting is Orr, long before its later ruined state in the series timeline. In this period, Orr is a lush frontier filled with magic, spirits, wilderness, and conflict between guilds.
ArenaNet is positioning Guild Wars 3 as a modern MMO built around action combat, movement, character building, and skill collection. The studio says combat will rely on positioning, movement, and smart skill use rather than only traditional MMO rotations. That direction suggests a more active and responsive experience, while still keeping the build making identity that has long defined Guild Wars.
Orr becomes the center of the new Guild Wars story
Guild Wars 3 takes players to a version of Orr that is still alive, green, and full of spiritual energy. The region is shaped by nature entities called Vael spirits, which are tied closely to the land and its ecosystems. These spirits vary in size and influence, but the most important one shown so far is the Seeker.
Every player will have a Seeker, which acts as both a mount and a connection to the spirits of Orr. This gives the mount system more story weight than a simple travel feature. It also fits the game’s focus on movement, since players will be able to run, slide, leap, glide, sprint, and ride through the open world while carrying momentum between different forms of traversal.
Players take on the role of a Vaelwarden, a guardian of Orr who protects the people and spirits living there. The conflict comes from different guilds fighting over how the land’s magic should be used, protected, or exploited.

Combat and movement are being treated as core systems
ArenaNet says Guild Wars 3 is designed to push the MMO genre forward with a world that feels responsive, rewarding, and respectful of players’ time. The combat system will mix action RPG elements with Guild Wars style customization, giving players room to experiment with builds while still rewarding skill during fights.

Movement also appears to be one of the game’s biggest features. Instead of treating mounts, gliding, running, and jumping as separate actions, Guild Wars 3 will let momentum carry across travel modes. That could make exploration feel smoother and more physical, especially in a large open world built around wilderness, ruins, spirits, and vertical spaces.
The PlayStation 5 version is also important. Guild Wars has traditionally been a PC focused series, so a console release with full controller support marks a major shift. It may help ArenaNet reach a wider audience, especially as more MMOs try to move beyond the keyboard and mouse crowd.
Closed Beta begins in Fall 2027
Guild Wars 3 does not have a full release date yet, but ArenaNet confirmed that Closed Beta testing will begin in Fall 2027. That timing suggests the full game may not arrive until 2028 or later, depending on how testing and development progress.
The Steam page is already live with early PC requirements. The listed minimum specs include Windows 10 64 bit, an Intel Core i5 8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 processor, 16GB of RAM, an RTX 2060, Radeon RX 5700, or Intel Arc A580 graphics card, and 65GB of storage. These requirements may change before launch.
Guild Wars 3 is a major return for ArenaNet. By setting the game in a pre cataclysm version of Orr, adding spirit connected mounts, and focusing on action combat and movement, the studio is trying to make the next chapter feel familiar without repeating the past. For longtime fans, the prequel setting opens a part of Tyria that has only been seen through history. For new players, the PlayStation 5 launch and action focused design could make this the most accessible Guild Wars entry yet.
