GTA 6 Will Not Use Generative AI or Include Microtransactions in Its Main Game

Grand Theft Auto VI will not include generative AI or microtransactions in its main game, according to comments from Rockstar North leadership.

Rockstar North co studio head Rob Nelson was asked directly whether GTA 6 would use generative AI or include microtransactions, and the answer to both questions was no. That gives players clearer information about two areas that have become increasingly controversial across modern game development and monetization.

The confirmation applies specifically to GTA 6 itself. It does not necessarily mean that the next version of GTA Online will avoid paid purchases, as Rockstar's online business has historically relied heavily on recurring spending.

Rockstar rules out generative AI for GTA 6

Generative AI has become a major discussion point across the games industry, with developers increasingly experimenting with AI assisted tools for art, dialogue, programming and other production tasks.

Rockstar's answer indicates that GTA 6 itself will not contain generative AI generated content.

That separates it from games and development pipelines where AI generated assets or systems form part of the finished product.

The distinction is important because platform holders and storefronts have also started introducing policies around AI generated content. Some require developers to disclose its use, while concerns around copyright, training data and creative ownership remain unresolved across the wider industry.

For GTA 6, Rockstar appears to be taking a more traditional development approach, at least in terms of generative AI appearing inside the shipped game.

GTA 6 will also avoid microtransactions

Rockstar also confirmed that the main GTA 6 experience will not contain microtransactions.

That means players should not expect the single player game to sell additional currency, consumables or similar paid items inside the core release.

This is notable because GTA 6 is positioned as a premium release rather than a free to play title.

Microtransactions in full price games remain unpopular with many players, particularly when they affect progression or introduce additional spending into a product that already carries a substantial upfront cost.

Rockstar's decision keeps the main GTA 6 experience separate from that model.

GTA Online is likely to remain a different business

The microtransaction confirmation should not automatically be extended to GTA Online.

The current GTA Online, which remains tied to GTA V, has been a major source of recurring revenue for Rockstar and parent company Take Two. Its business model has included paid virtual currency and ongoing monetized content for years.

Rockstar has not yet detailed the next generation of GTA Online associated with GTA 6, so its monetization model remains unconfirmed.

However, given the commercial importance of GTA Online, it would not be surprising if paid purchases return in the online component even though they are absent from the main GTA 6 campaign.

That separation matters. Players buying GTA 6 for its story mode can now expect an experience without microtransactions, while the online side may continue operating under a different model.

The confirmation also gives Rockstar a clearer message around the launch. GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated games in the industry, and avoiding both generative AI and microtransactions in the main game removes two potential sources of controversy before release.
