Grand Theft Auto VI could sell between 37 million and 51 million copies during its first week, according to estimates based on early preorder performance and the franchise’s existing audience.
The upper forecast would make GTA 6 one of the largest entertainment launches ever recorded. Estimated first week revenue ranges from $3.25 billion to $5.2 billion, depending on demand after launch and the number of buyers choosing the more expensive editions.
These figures remain predictions rather than confirmed sales. GTA 6 will not launch until November 19, 2026, and several factors could affect its final performance. Reviews, technical stability, availability, pricing, and player reaction will all influence how many copies are sold.
Even the lower estimate would place the game far ahead of most major releases. Selling one or two million copies is considered a strong result for many modern games, while GTA 6 could pass that figure many times over within its opening days.
Early preorders suggest unusually high demand
The projections are based partly on preorder revenue from the United States and five major European markets, including the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain.
Preorders reportedly generated around $180 million across those regions during the first week of availability. When other markets are included, the estimated worldwide total rises to approximately $260 million.
The calculations use an average selling price of $88 across the available standard and premium editions. Buyers choosing more expensive versions could raise total revenue even if unit sales remain below the highest estimate.
| Forecast | Estimated first week result |
|---|---|
| Lower unit estimate | Around 37 million copies |
| Upper unit estimate | Around 51 million copies |
| Lower revenue estimate | About $3.25 billion |
| Upper revenue estimate | About $5.2 billion |
| Estimated average selling price | $88 |
| Estimated global first week preorder revenue | $260 million |
The franchise has several advantages that support strong demand. Grand Theft Auto V has remained active for more than a decade, giving its sequel a large established audience. GTA Online also introduced millions of players to the series after the original release.
GTA 6 is therefore not entering the market as an unfamiliar product. It is following one of the most commercially successful games ever released, with years of anticipation behind it.
The upper forecast would require extraordinary launch conditions
Selling 51 million copies in one week would require strong demand across nearly every supported region. Digital storefronts, console networks, payment systems, and game servers would also need to handle an unusually large volume of activity.

The lack of a PC version at launch may limit the first week total. GTA 6 is currently confirmed only for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A later PC release could create another major sales period, but those purchases would not contribute to the console launch numbers.
The estimate also assumes that interest remains high until November. A major technical problem, another delay, weak reviews, or controversy around pricing could reduce sales.
However, demand appears strong even without frequent trailers or detailed gameplay presentations. The game’s name alone is likely to attract both long term fans and people who do not regularly purchase new releases.
Digital only physical editions may affect buying decisions
GTA 6 is scheduled to support preloading from November 12 for people who preorder. This gives buyers one week to download the game before servers unlock on November 19.
The physical edition will reportedly not include a game disc. Instead, buyers will receive access to a digital copy, even when purchasing a boxed version.
That decision could be unpopular with collectors and people who prefer physical ownership. It may also create problems for buyers with slow internet connections or limited monthly data.
A large download will place additional pressure on console networks during the preload period. Starting downloads a week early should help distribute traffic rather than forcing every buyer to install the game on release day.
GTA 6 is positioned to set new industry records
Even the lower forecast of 37 million copies would represent an exceptional result. The higher estimate would place GTA 6 beyond the opening performance of nearly every modern game.
The final total will depend on how many existing GTA V players upgrade, how premium editions are priced, and whether the launch meets expectations. Console availability will also matter, especially if demand encourages more people to purchase a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series system.
GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026. Its first week performance remains impossible to confirm in advance, but the current preorder figures suggest that its launch will be one of the largest events the gaming industry has seen.
