Grand Theft Auto VI may eventually come to Nintendo Switch 2, according to new claims that Nintendo is working directly with Rockstar Games and Take Two to explore a port. The game is currently confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, with a November 19 release date, but a Switch 2 version has not been announced.
The report should still be treated carefully. There is no official confirmation from Nintendo, Rockstar, or Take Two. However, multiple insiders are now suggesting that technical work may be happening behind the scenes, including support from teams experienced in bringing large games to Nintendo hardware.
If true, the project would be one of the most demanding ports ever attempted for a Nintendo console.
The Main Challenge Would Be Optimization
GTA 6 is expected to be one of the most technically demanding games of its generation. It features a large open world, detailed crowds, advanced lighting, dense city areas, complex vehicle systems, and a high level of environmental detail.
That makes a Switch 2 version difficult, but not impossible.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is not as powerful as PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. However, it may be closer to Xbox Series S in some areas than previous Nintendo hardware was to competing consoles. GTA 6 already needs to run on Xbox Series S, which could give Rockstar experience in scaling the game down for less powerful hardware.
| Platform | Expected GTA 6 status |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Confirmed |
| Xbox Series X | Confirmed |
| Xbox Series S | Confirmed |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Rumored, not confirmed |
| PC | Not confirmed for launch |
A Switch 2 version would likely need major changes to resolution, texture quality, draw distance, crowd density, lighting effects, and frame rate. A 30fps target would be much more realistic than aiming for 60fps.
Nintendo Could Be Using External Port Specialists
The rumor suggests that Nintendo may be working with Rockstar and outside porting teams to make the game possible. This would not be unusual for a major third-party release.

Large publishers often use specialist studios to adapt games for lower-powered platforms. These teams focus on reducing memory use, improving streaming systems, rebuilding assets, adjusting graphics settings, and making sure the final version remains stable.
For GTA 6, that work could take a long time. Even if development is underway, the game may not arrive on Switch 2 anywhere near the PlayStation and Xbox launch window.
The report claims that a release this year is unlikely.
GTA Has Appeared on Nintendo Platforms Before
Grand Theft Auto has appeared on Nintendo systems in the past, but mostly through handheld releases and older ports.
| Game | Nintendo platform |
|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto | Game Boy Color |
| Grand Theft Auto 2 | Game Boy Color |
| Grand Theft Auto Advance | Game Boy Advance |
| Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars | Nintendo DS |
| GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition | Nintendo Switch |
A full version of GTA 6 on Switch 2 would be a much bigger step than any of those releases. It would show that Nintendo’s new hardware can attract more demanding current-generation games, not only older ports and smaller third-party titles.
A Switch 2 Version Would Be a Major Win for Nintendo
For Nintendo, getting GTA 6 would be a major statement. The game is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches of the decade, and a Switch 2 release could help strengthen the console’s appeal for players who want major third-party games alongside Nintendo exclusives.
For Rockstar, the benefit would be access to Nintendo’s large audience. The trade-off would be the time and cost required to make the game run well on a hybrid system.
Until Rockstar or Nintendo confirms anything, GTA 6 on Switch 2 remains a rumor. Still, the idea no longer sounds impossible, especially if Nintendo is willing to provide direct technical and publishing support.
