GoPro Max2 Launches with a Bold 'True 8K' Video Claim

GoPro has officially unveiled its new flagship 360° camera, the Max2, making a direct challenge to its competitors with the claim that it's the only camera on the market capable of capturing "True 8K" 360° video. The new model combines a rugged, user-friendly design with a suite of professional-grade features aimed at creators and action sports enthusiasts.

The launch is a clear statement of intent from GoPro, aiming to reclaim the top spot in the 360° camera space. Founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman highlighted the Max2's market-leading resolution, superior image quality, advanced six-microphone audio performance, and convenient replaceable lenses as key differentiators.

The 'True 8K' Resolution Advantage

GoPro's central marketing claim is that the Max2 offers up to 21% higher resolution than competing 8K 360° cameras. The company specifically states that rivals like the Insta360 X5 and DJI Osmo 360 capture video that is technically below the 8K standard for flat videos, positioning the Max2 as the superior choice for image clarity.

The camera records this high-resolution 360° footage at 30 frames per second. It also offers slow-motion capabilities with 5.6K video at 60fps and 4K video at 100fps. All footage benefits from GoPro's Emmy Award-winning HyperSmooth stabilization technology, ensuring smooth and stable shots even during intense action.

Pro-Grade Features and Usability

Beyond its headline resolution, the Max2 is packed with features designed for both convenience and high-end production. The camera captures 10-bit video and includes GP-Log, allowing professional creators to maximize dynamic range during color grading in post-production.

Upgraded Audio and Single-Lens Mode

Audio quality has been significantly upgraded with an industry-leading six-microphone array. The Max2 also supports external wireless microphones, including popular Bluetooth earbuds like Apple's AirPods. For traditional video capture, a single-lens mode allows for 4K 60fps recording using either the front or rear camera, with five digital lens options to adjust the field of view.

Enhanced Durability and Design

The Max2 features a new low-profile, aerodynamic design that is waterproof and built for high-impact activities. A major practical improvement is the new twist-and-go replaceable lenses, which can be swapped without any tools if they get scratched or damaged. The camera also includes built-in GPS and a specialized "Enduro" battery optimized for cold weather performance.

Advanced Tools for Creators

GoPro is further catering to professional users with improved workflow integrations. A new DaVinci Resolve plug-in will simplify editing 360° footage for professional output. For those who want to push the camera's limits, the free GoPro Labs beta software provides access to experimental features like 300Mbps bitrate recording, 24p video modes, and advanced exposure controls.
