Framework has lowered storage prices for its Laptop 13 Pro DIY Edition by switching to a new PCIe Gen 5 SSD supplier. The change affects new pre orders and existing orders that included the previous Gen 5 storage options, giving buyers more capacity at a lower price.
The company has qualified ADATA’s XPG MARS 970 SSD for the Laptop 13 Pro and says the drive offers better performance, efficiency, and long term reliability than the previous option. It will be available in 1TB and 2TB configurations for new DIY Edition orders.
Framework is also moving existing customers to the new SSD where possible. Anyone who selected the previous 500GB Gen 5 option will be upgraded to a 1TB ADATA drive while paying less than before. Customers who already ordered other Gen 5 SSD capacities will also move to the new storage option with updated lower pricing.
The Change Applies Only to DIY Edition Gen 5 SSD Configurations
The price adjustment is limited to Framework Laptop 13 Pro DIY Edition systems with PCIe Gen 5 SSDs. Prebuilt versions are not included because they currently use PCIe Gen 4 storage.
Framework’s approach is useful for people who prefer to build and upgrade their own laptops. The DIY Edition allows buyers to choose components, memory, storage, and operating system options, while keeping many parts replaceable later.
| Storage option | New Framework approach |
|---|---|
| Previous 500GB PCIe Gen 5 SSD order | Upgraded to 1TB ADATA XPG MARS 970 |
| Previous 1TB or 2TB PCIe Gen 5 SSD order | Moved to new ADATA SSD with lower price |
| New DIY Edition order | Can choose 1TB or 2TB ADATA PCIe Gen 5 SSD |
| Prebuilt Laptop 13 Pro | Not affected, continues with PCIe Gen 4 SSDs |
Framework says it secured a limited batch of the new drives. The company is still working to obtain more PCIe Gen 5 SSD supply, so the lower pricing may not remain available once the current stock has been allocated.
CPU Pricing Could Push Overall Laptop Prices Higher
The storage price reduction comes with a warning for potential buyers. Framework says it has received indications that CPU costs may rise soon, which could lead to higher Laptop 13 Pro prices for new orders in the coming weeks.

The company has not shared exact pricing changes or named the processors affected. However, the warning suggests that current Laptop 13 Pro prices may not last, even though storage costs have fallen for selected DIY configurations.
This reflects a wider problem across the PC market. Memory, storage, and component costs have been under pressure, and laptop makers may need to adjust prices as supply conditions change.
Existing Customers Will Receive the Lower Storage Price
One of the more positive parts of Framework’s announcement is its treatment of existing pre orders. Rather than limiting the benefit to new customers, the company plans to update qualifying earlier orders to use the new ADATA storage and apply the lower price.
That means people who placed a Laptop 13 Pro DIY Edition order before the change should not be penalised for ordering early. The automatic upgrade from 500GB to 1TB is also a meaningful improvement for buyers who need more room for games, media files, creative projects, or virtual machines.
Framework’s current update makes the Laptop 13 Pro more attractive for buyers considering a DIY laptop. However, with potential CPU price increases ahead and a limited SSD supply, the company is making clear that its present pricing may only be temporary.
