Final Fantasy VII Revelation Expands Materia Builds With Three Linked Armor Slots

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will make major changes to character customization, including armor that can link three Materia slots together for the first time in the remake trilogy.

Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed the feature while discussing how Revelation expands the systems introduced in Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth. Previous games generally used linked pairs of Materia slots, but some armor in Revelation will allow three Materia to interact.

The change should create more powerful combinations and give you greater freedom when building characters for late game battles.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is scheduled to launch on April 8, 2027.

Three linked Materia slots open new build options

Materia customization is being expanded beyond what was possible in Rebirth.

Some armor will include three linked slots rather than the traditional pairs. This means several Materia effects can potentially interact within one linked group, depending on which combinations the game supports.

Hamaguchi said the system can amplify the effects of equipped Materia, giving players more room to create specialized builds.

Revelation will also introduce additional combined Materia. These combine multiple abilities into fewer slots, helping address the problem of increasingly crowded Materia loadouts as characters gain access to more abilities.

Not every Materia will support these combinations, but the overall number of customization options is expected to increase considerably.

Master Materia, however, will not return. Hamaguchi said the team considered the concept too difficult to balance because a single Materia granting access to a large group of abilities or summons could undermine the combat system.

FITS adds another layer to character customization

Materia will also interact with Revelation's new FITS system.

FITS provides job inspired combat roles that change character abilities and appearances. Some Materia will only work with particular FITS, encouraging different combinations of equipment and roles.

The system grew from an earlier idea that would have added small job symbols to character outfits. The team eventually decided that approach was too limited for the final game in the trilogy, so each character now receives complete outfits tied to the available roles.

The developers deliberately avoided calling it a traditional Final Fantasy job system because Revelation only includes four core roles rather than the much larger selection usually associated with that term.

Exploration will encourage returning to older regions

Revelation is also changing how progression works across its open world.

Unlike Rebirth, where regions generally followed the order of the main story, Revelation will include areas containing content far above your current level.

You may enter a region, find enemies around level 65, then return much later when your party is strong enough.

Importantly, side quests will not permanently disappear if you advance too far in the main story. Hamaguchi said he does not want players forced to complete optional content at specific points.

The entire planet is being treated as the foundation of the game's exploration rather than a collection of isolated regional maps.

Knights of the Round gets its own storyline

The famous Knights of the Round summon will return through a dedicated quest structure.

Its treatment will be similar to the Gilgamesh content in Rebirth. Instead of simply finding the summon Materia in one location, you will follow a storyline divided into several parts before gaining access to it.

Other returning elements include Johnny and his clones, along with another large selection of minigames.

The Moogles will even form an idol group. Cloud and the party will help them gain supporters around the world before a larger event takes place at the Gold Saucer.

Revelation will also include a visit to space after reaching Rocket Town.

The broader changes suggest that Square Enix is using the final chapter to expand both combat depth and exploration rather than simply continuing Rebirth's systems unchanged. The three linked Materia slots may appear like a small mechanical adjustment, but for players who spend time refining party builds, they could become one of Revelation's most important customization changes.
