Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on PC is set to receive another major visual upgrade through the unofficial Shader Injector mod, with version 3.0 now in development.
The upcoming update will introduce a dynamic sky and an experimental time of day system, two features that are not available in the original game. The mod is being developed by David Mathos, who has already used earlier versions of Shader Injector to address lighting issues and improve the overall presentation of the PC release.
Shader Injector 3.0 does not have a release date yet, and the new features are still being tuned.
Shader Injector 3.0 expands beyond lighting fixes
The next version includes several changes under the hood, including new custom render passes, visual corrections, noise reduction and additional graphical upgrades.
The biggest additions are the dynamic sky and time of day features.
| Feature | Shader Injector 3.0 |
|---|---|
| Dynamic sky | Confirmed |
| Experimental time of day | Confirmed |
| Custom render passes | Planned |
| Noise reduction | Improved |
| Lighting corrections | Improved |
| Transition smoothing | Still being tuned |
| Release date | Not announced |
The time of day functionality is being developed in collaboration with the creator of a scenery modification tool. Work is still underway on transitions, tuning and corrections before the feature is ready for release.
That means the current footage represents a work in progress rather than the final version of Shader Injector 3.0.
Existing lights make nighttime scenes possible
One interesting detail behind the time of day system is that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth already appears to contain many of the light sources needed for nighttime environments.
According to the mod developer, lights that become visible during night scenes are also active during daytime. They simply have little visible impact because daylight overwhelms their contribution to the final image.

That also means some of those lights may continue consuming rendering resources even when they are effectively invisible.
Shader Injector 3.0 takes advantage of these existing elements to create more natural changes between daytime and nighttime rather than building every lighting source from scratch.
The result could make areas of the game look significantly different depending on the time of day while preserving much of the original environmental design.
The mod continues addressing Rebirth’s flat lighting
Previous versions of Shader Injector focused heavily on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s lighting presentation.
The PC version has been criticized for environments that can occasionally appear flat or lack depth, particularly under certain lighting conditions.
Earlier updates to the mod improved shadows, reflections and other rendering effects to create a stronger sense of depth.
Version 3.0 appears to be broadening that goal. Instead of only correcting individual visual effects, the update is adding systems that can change the appearance of entire environments over time.
Dynamic skies should also help outdoor areas feel less static, especially when combined with changing lighting conditions.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth still has technical limitations
The continued development of Shader Injector also highlights how much room remains for community improvements to the PC version.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is widely praised for its world design and visual direction, but its technical presentation has not always matched the quality of its art.
Community modifications have been able to improve several aspects that were left unchanged in the official release.
Shader Injector 3.0 could become one of the most significant updates yet if its time of day implementation works consistently across the game’s large environments.
There is currently no confirmed launch date for the update. The developer is still working on transition smoothing, visual corrections and broader compatibility before releasing the new version.
