Fallout 76 is finally getting its long awaited next gen update this summer, giving Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro players a sharper and smoother version of Bethesda’s multiplayer Fallout game. The update will enter public testing in June before its wider release later in the summer.
Bethesda first confirmed the next gen update late last year, but details had been quiet until the latest Season 25 patch notes arrived. The new information confirms that the update will improve draw distances, shadow quality, resolution support, and refresh rate behavior across supported consoles.
On Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 5 Pro, Bethesda is targeting 60 FPS performance. The update will also add variable refresh rate support for compatible displays, which should help reduce screen tearing and make gameplay feel smoother when the frame rate shifts.
The resolution breakdown is more interesting. Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 Pro will support 4K, while the standard PlayStation 5 will run at 1440p. Bethesda has not listed a higher resolution target for Xbox Series S beyond confirming the 60 FPS goal, which suggests the smaller Xbox may stay at 1080p.
Some older consoles will also benefit. Xbox One X is getting 4K support, which is surprising because the base PlayStation 5 is only getting 1440p. PlayStation 4 Pro will move from 1080p to 1440p. That makes the Xbox One X result stand out, even though it will still be limited by older hardware and lower frame rate expectations.
| Platform | Resolution target | Performance target |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 4K | 60 FPS |
| Xbox Series S | Not clearly detailed, likely lower than 4K | 60 FPS |
| PlayStation 5 | 1440p | 60 FPS |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | 4K | 60 FPS |
| Xbox One X | 4K | Not listed as 60 FPS |
| PlayStation 4 Pro | 1440p | Not listed as 60 FPS |
The update should make Fallout 76 feel better on modern hardware, especially for players who have stayed with the game for years. Better shadows and draw distance can make Appalachia feel less dated, while 60 FPS should improve combat, exploration, and general movement.
Bethesda has not shared the exact release date yet. The studio says more testing details will be announced through its social channels. The test versions will be available for free to people who already own Fallout 76 on Xbox and PlayStation.

The news arrives alongside the Infestations update and Season 25, titled Appalachia Under Siege. That patch is live now across Xbox, PC, and PlayStation. It adds new combat focused Infestations activities where players clear out tougher enemies for 4 Star Rewards. These rewards include powerful gear, while the Season 25 reward path brings new outfits, C.A.M.P. items, and other unlocks.
Fallout 76 had a rough launch in 2018, but Bethesda has spent years rebuilding it through expansions, events, systems updates, and seasonal content. The next gen patch is another sign that the studio is still supporting the game well beyond its original release window.
For console players, the summer update could be one of the most important Fallout 76 upgrades in years. It will not turn the game into a new release, but higher resolution targets, better visuals, VRR support, and 60 FPS performance should make Appalachia feel much closer to what modern players expect.
