Fallout 76 is finally getting its long promised next gen update this summer, giving Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5 players a sharper and smoother version of Bethesda’s multiplayer Fallout game. Public testing is also planned for June, although Bethesda has not yet shared the exact testing date or final release day.
The update was first announced last year, but details were quiet for months. Bethesda has now revealed more through the patch notes for Fallout 76’s Infestations update and Season 25, titled Appalachia Under Siege.
The biggest improvements are visual. Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5 versions will receive better draw distances and improved shadow quality. Bethesda is also targeting 60 FPS across the newer consoles, which should make exploring Appalachia feel smoother during combat, events, and general movement.
| Platform | Resolution target | Other improvements |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 4K | 60 FPS target, better draw distance, improved shadows, VRR |
| Xbox Series S | Not detailed | 60 FPS target, better draw distance, improved shadows, VRR |
| PlayStation 5 | 1440p | 60 FPS target, better draw distance, improved shadows, VRR |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | 4K | 60 FPS target, better draw distance, improved shadows, VRR |
| Xbox One X | 4K | Resolution upgrade |
| PlayStation 4 Pro | 1440p | Resolution upgrade |
The Xbox One X detail is especially interesting. Bethesda says Microsoft’s older enhanced Xbox One model will get 4K support, while the base PlayStation 5 version is listed at 1440p. The PS5 will still have the major advantage of 60 FPS, but it is unusual to see the Xbox One X getting a higher resolution target than Sony’s standard current generation console.

The Xbox Series S situation is less clear. Bethesda mentioned that it is targeting 60 FPS on the system, but did not list a resolution upgrade beyond that. That likely means the Series S will stay focused on performance rather than pushing higher visual fidelity.
Variable refresh rate support is also coming to Xbox Series X and S and PlayStation 5 versions when used with compatible displays. VRR should help reduce screen tearing and make frame pacing feel smoother when performance shifts during heavy action.
Season 25 adds Infestations and new rewards
The next gen update is not the only thing happening. Fallout 76’s Infestations update is live now across Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. It adds new combat focused activities where players clear out enemy infestations to earn 4 star rewards. These rewards include powerful gear, while the Season 25 reward path also includes outfits, C.A.M.P. items, and other unlocks.
This is useful timing for Fallout 76. The game launched in 2018 with major problems, but Bethesda has spent years reshaping it into a more complete live service Fallout experience. The next gen update gives current console players another reason to return, especially if they have been waiting for a smoother and sharper version.
Bethesda has not confirmed exactly when public testing for the next gen update will begin. The studio says more details will be shared through its social channels. Testing versions will be available to players who own Fallout 76 through the Xbox and PlayStation marketplaces.
The update will not completely reinvent Fallout 76, but it should make the game feel more modern on newer hardware. Better draw distances, improved shadows, 60 FPS targets, VRR support, and higher resolution options all matter in an open world game where exploration and atmosphere carry so much of the experience.
For longtime players, Appalachia Under Siege adds fresh seasonal goals. For returning players, the next gen update may be the better reason to come back. Fallout 76 has already had one of gaming’s more unusual redemption arcs, and this summer’s upgrade should help it feel less tied to its rough last generation roots.
