Fable was originally targeting an October 2026 release before Xbox and Playground Games moved the RPG to February 2027, according to game director Ralph Fulton.
Microsoft announced the delay earlier this year without previously giving Fable a specific 2026 release date. Fulton has now confirmed that October was the internal target, while also saying he supports the decision to move the game away from what he described as a particularly crowded release period.
The timing would have placed Fable relatively close to Grand Theft Auto VI, which appears to have been the main title Xbox wanted to avoid. Fulton indicated that Playground Games is comfortable competing with other major releases scheduled around early 2027.

Playground Games was preparing for an October launch
Before the delay, Playground Games had been working toward an October 2026 release.
Fulton said he had been looking forward to shipping the game this year and acknowledged that moving it means another year beginning with the development team still working toward launch.
However, he described the reasoning behind the schedule change as sound and said he was pleased Fable would avoid the crowded October period.
The confirmation provides more detail about the delay because Microsoft had not publicly committed to an October date before moving the game to February.
That means the change was not technically a delay from an announced October launch, but it did represent a significant shift in Playground Games' internal development and release plans.
GTA VI was the release Xbox wanted to avoid
The early months of 2027 are not empty.
Fable is expected to launch around several other notable games, including Persona 4 Revival, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Stranger Than Heaven.
Fulton nevertheless suggested that Playground Games is willing to compete directly with those releases. GTA VI was the exception.
According to the director, the team specifically wanted to avoid that game rather than simply escape competition altogether.

The distinction matters because it suggests the delay was driven primarily by release strategy rather than an indication that Playground Games believed Fable could not compete with other major RPGs and action games.
Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to command unusually high attention around its launch, making it difficult for other large releases to secure the same level of coverage and consumer spending during the same period.
The delay also gives Fable additional development time
Moving from October to February gives Playground Games several extra months before release.
The studio has not said that Fable required those additional months because of specific technical problems, so the delay should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of development trouble.
The additional time can nevertheless be used for bug fixing, balancing and general refinement before launch.
Recent demonstrations have shown extended quest and combat footage from the new Fable, giving a much clearer view of Playground Games' interpretation of Albion.
The February 2027 window may still be competitive, but Playground Games appears more comfortable entering that period than launching close to GTA VI.
For now, Fable remains scheduled for February 2027, with the newly revealed October target showing that players came relatively close to receiving the long awaited RPG several months earlier.
