Vagrant Story has received an unofficial native PC port that goes far beyond simply making the original PlayStation game playable without emulation.
The project, called rood-boi, recompiles the game's original logic for modern x86-64 PCs and replaces the PlayStation hardware layer with native PC equivalents. It currently supports Linux, with Windows builds possible through Linux or WSL.
Alongside native execution, the port adds a modern renderer with ray tracing, path tracing, volumetric effects and multiple lighting modes. More importantly for gameplay, it also introduces optional quick weapon swapping and a companion system that allows Callo Merlose to accompany Ashley Riot.
Vagrant Story Runs Natively Without a PlayStation Emulator
The port is based on the rood-reverse decompilation project.
Instead of running the PlayStation version through an emulator or MIPS interpreter, the original game logic has been converted into C code that compiles directly for x86-64 systems.
A custom host layer replaces several parts of the original PlayStation hardware, including the GPU, Geometry Transformation Engine, audio processor, CD drive, memory cards and controller input.
| Feature | Unofficial Vagrant Story PC port |
|---|---|
| Native PC execution | Yes |
| Emulator required | No |
| Linux support | Yes |
| Windows support | Buildable through Linux or WSL |
| Vulkan renderer | Yes |
| OpenGL option | Yes |
| Hardware ray tracing | Yes |
| Path traced lighting | Yes |
| Volumetric haze | Yes |
| Quick weapon slots | Optional |
| Callo Merlose companion | Optional mod |
The project keeps the game's original geometry, textures and 2D artwork rather than replacing the visual identity completely.
Path Tracing Modernizes the Lighting
The new renderer is one of the biggest technical additions.
Vagrant Story's environments are drawn from native meshes using Vulkan or OpenGL, with several optional lighting systems layered on top.
The port supports hardware accelerated ray traced soft shadows, per pixel path traced indirect lighting, probe based global illumination, ambient occlusion and volumetric haze.
The Ultra lighting setting uses path traced indirect illumination with NVIDIA NRD denoising.
Medium and High settings can instead use DDGI probe based global illumination, while shadow maps remain available on systems without ray tracing support.
Players can also choose presets that retain the original baked lighting rather than using the remastered effects.
This gives you the option to preserve the PlayStation presentation or substantially modernize the lighting while keeping the original models and textures.
A Live Editor Lets You Change Lighting While the Game Runs
The project also includes a live editor described as similar in concept to tools found in modern game engines.
You can detach the camera, move freely through environments and place or adjust lights while Vagrant Story is running.
That makes the port useful beyond ordinary play, particularly for people interested in examining the game's environments or experimenting with modern lighting inside its original geometry.
Quick Weapon Swapping Could Be the Most Useful Addition
The visual upgrades are technically impressive, but one of the most practical changes affects Vagrant Story's combat system.
The port adds optional weapon slots that allow you to switch weapons quickly during gameplay.
Weapon selection is particularly important in Vagrant Story because different weapon and damage types can be much more effective against particular enemies.

In the original game, regularly changing equipment could require more menu navigation.
The new slots reduce that friction and make it easier to adapt your loadout during combat.
For returning players, this could have a larger effect on everyday gameplay than ray traced lighting.
Callo Merlose Can Now Join Ashley Riot
Another optional addition changes the traditionally solitary structure of the game.
A companion mod allows Callo Merlose to travel alongside Ashley Riot.
Merlose operates independently rather than requiring direct control. She can fight enemies, heal Ashley and cast spells on her own.
The implementation also attempts to avoid disrupting the original story presentation.
Merlose disappears during cutscenes, preserving the narrative framing of Ashley's mission while still providing a companion during normal gameplay.
That makes the feature feel more integrated than a simple character replacement or basic follower mod.
The Original PlayStation Style Is Still Preserved
Despite adding modern effects, the project does not attempt to turn Vagrant Story into a completely different looking game.
Nearest filtered textures, the original geometry and the game's 2D elements are retained.
This allows the new lighting and rendering systems to sit on top of the original art direction instead of replacing it.
Vagrant Story remains distinctive because of its combination of action combat, tactical systems and its darker interpretation of Ivalice, the setting also associated with Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII.
The unofficial PC port now gives the game a substantially more modern technical foundation while leaving its underlying design intact.
With native execution, advanced lighting, quick weapon switching and an optional companion system, rood-boi adds features substantial enough to resemble what you might expect from a full remaster rather than a straightforward fan port.
