Fable has received an extended gameplay showcase at Gamescom 2026, offering a closer look at how Playground Games is rebuilding the series around more flexible combat, character relationships, exploration and player choice.
The new footage runs for around 18 minutes and follows the protagonist through a quest involving their grandmother and village, both of which have been turned to stone by a hero named Isabel. Along the way, the demo shows conversations with NPCs, city exploration, skill progression and several combat encounters.
Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, with versions planned for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5 and Steam. It will also support Xbox Play Anywhere and arrive on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
Combat gives you more ways to react
The latest demonstration places a strong focus on combat and shows a wider set of defensive and offensive options than earlier entries in the series.
You can parry attacks, dodge incoming strikes and use melee weapons alongside ranged attacks and magic. The character can also catch arrows and throw them back at enemies, knock weapons from opponents' hands, and build a stagger meter before performing finishing attacks.
Magic appears to play an important role as well. The footage includes fireballs capable of pushing enemies from elevated areas and a spell that transforms opponents into chickens.
| Feature | Details shown |
|---|---|
| Melee combat | Parries, finishers and stagger based attacks |
| Ranged combat | Bows and crossbows can disrupt enemies |
| Defensive options | Dodging and catching incoming arrows |
| Magic | Fire attacks and transformation spells |
| Character progression | Skill tree used to unlock or improve abilities |
| Dialogue | Choices can change how characters respond to you |
| Life simulation | Homes, businesses, relationships and families |
A notable part of the system is the attempt to keep different abilities accessible without forcing you to constantly manage traditional loadout menus. The goal appears to be smoother transitions between sword attacks, ranged weapons and spells during a fight.
The demo also introduces several enemy types beyond ordinary bandits. Players will encounter skeletons, wraiths, Cockatrices and stronger opponents such as the Lantern Keeper.
Relationships and choices remain central to Fable
Combat is only one part of the reboot. Playground Games is retaining the social and life simulation elements closely associated with Fable.
You will be able to interact with residents, develop relationships, buy property, start businesses and potentially create a family. Dialogue decisions can influence how individual characters feel about you, continuing the series' emphasis on reputation and consequences.

The footage also shows the game's sense of humor through cinematic conversations and character interactions, while the skill tree provides another layer of progression as you develop your version of the hero.
These systems suggest that the new Fable is trying to combine the identity of the original games with a more modern action RPG structure rather than simply expanding the scale of Albion.
With its February 2027 release now established, the remaining months will give Playground Games time to refine combat responsiveness, enemy encounters and the balance between exploration, relationships and action. The Gamescom demonstration provides the clearest look yet at how those systems are intended to work together when Fable returns next year.
