Three newer indie games are performing strongly in the Xbox Store’s Top Paid charts, with Escape the Backrooms taking the number one position ahead of major releases such as EA Sports FC 26, 007 First Light and Forza Horizon 6.
The chart position is notable because Escape the Backrooms is included with Xbox Game Pass, yet it is still attracting enough paid purchases to lead the store ranking. NBA The Run and Bellwright are also performing well, showing that smaller games can still find a large audience on Xbox when they offer clear ideas and strong word of mouth.
Xbox Store rankings can change quickly and may not always update immediately after a sale ends, but the current list highlights three indie games worth watching.
Escape the Backrooms takes the top spot
Escape the Backrooms is currently the highest ranked paid game on the Xbox Store. The co-op horror game supports one to four players and sends teams through more than 30 strange and dangerous Backrooms levels.
Players must explore abandoned spaces, avoid hostile entities, solve problems together and find a way out. The game’s co-op focus may be helping it stand out, especially for groups looking for a horror game that can be played casually with friends.
Its popularity is impressive because it is competing against much larger releases with bigger marketing budgets and established franchises.
| Game | Current chart position | Main genre |
|---|---|---|
| Escape the Backrooms | 1 | Co-op horror exploration |
| NBA The Run | 8 | Online street basketball |
| Bellwright | 11 | Survival and settlement building |
NBA The Run is beating NBA 2K26 in the charts
NBA The Run has reached the eighth position in the Xbox Store’s paid chart, placing it above NBA 2K26 at the time of writing. Its Deluxe Edition is also performing well, sitting much lower on the chart but still inside the top 25.
The game takes inspiration from classic arcade street basketball titles. It focuses on fast three versus three matches, exaggerated dunks, trick moves and recognisable NBA players.
NBA The Run appears to be targeting players who want a quicker and less simulation-heavy basketball experience. Rather than long seasons and detailed team management, it focuses on short matches, online competition and flashy streetball action.
That approach could help it attract players who miss games such as NBA Street or prefer a more accessible basketball game.
Bellwright makes a strong start on Xbox
Bellwright has also entered the charts in eleventh place after arriving on Xbox last week. The game was previously available on PC and has now found an early audience on consoles.
It combines survival, combat, settlement building and resource management. Players can recruit villagers, gather supplies, expand settlements and build enough power to challenge the Crown.

The Xbox version currently has a 3.9 out of 5 rating from more than 100 reviews on the Xbox Store. That is a decent start for a game with systems that may appeal more to players who enjoy crafting, management and long-term progression.
Indie games are finding room beside major releases
The performance of these three titles shows that Xbox players are still willing to try smaller games when they offer a distinct concept.
Escape the Backrooms gives players co-op horror and exploration. NBA The Run offers fast arcade basketball. Bellwright delivers a larger survival and settlement building experience.
Each game targets a different audience, but all three are competing successfully against much bigger releases.
The Xbox Store’s Top Paid chart may continue to shift as sales change and new games launch, but Escape the Backrooms, NBA The Run and Bellwright have already made a strong impression.
